Ok, my mother lives overseas, she came on holiday here in 2004 and got herself a new SIM card from a Vodafone store, used it for two months and then left it sitting there for 12 months until she came again here on holiday in 2005, and so on. She came on holiday a few weeks ago and on Saturday a girl called her sister saying that she lost her phone last week and she was wondering why my mother's sister and other numbers were in her phone... basically she was saying that her and my mom had the same number...

but, how can she have lost her phone and have my mums numbers in the phone book at the same time?

it this like SIM cloning?

UPDATE: the girl said she worked for Vodafone and could check my mums numbers in her SIM, but never gave her name and spoke broken english....

All very strange. Numbers and data stored on a SIM card are not sent over the air. And there couldn't exist two SIM cards with the same phone number.

And a Vodafone person would leave a name and you should then call back on 777 - just to be sure it's not a prank.

I just been told that when the girl called, my mums phone ID came up... could it be spoofing?

Most likely. If in doubt ask for name and if she says she works for Vodafone, ask what section, and call 777 to confirm.

777 is overloaded. Might have to wait until morning. Also tried to ring Auckland number but was put on hold for 50 min with no answer. Would it be better to go to a Vodafone store or to call?

the thing that bothers me is,

why would you use spoofing and not pretend to be someone else?

AND

why would you call and say you lost your phone when your actually calling with the number from the phone you allegedly lost? it's just plain strange.

also, I still don't understand how you could gain phone numbers stored on a mobile with spoofing.

Has it been exactley 12 months or just over (like 15 months) if so was it topped up in the last 12 months??? If not then what has happened is that the SIM card and its associated phone number were probably disconnected then recycled back into the number pool...

Happens quite frequently.

Last top up was January 2006 (this is before the November 2006 top up), when she used the SIM card this month it was still working and still had credit on. The girl claims she got the SIM in August 2006.

UPDATE: it would appear that this is neither spoofing or cloning. My mother got in contact with the girl and she does work for Vodafone. She also gave her name.

Not sure what this is but it looks like some sort of VF Network issue

basically my mothers number is the same as the girls, except my mom as a ZERO after the 021, which she hasn't

e.g.

0210101010

and

021101010

my mother called herself today and the girl answered. For some reason the network is picking up both numbers as one or something. Anyone here know what could be causing this?
