Is it true that Xnet can arrange with TCL/Telecom to use existing TCL/Telecom number for Xnet? I know that when a person moves from Telecom to TCL the person still can use Telecom number(say 801-1234) and new TCL number(say 934-1234).

As far as I know it isn't possible at the moment. You may need to wait for number portablity to come into effect before transferring numbers.

You will be able to once number portability comes into effect next year. Any provider that is a member of the nz number deed (ie has a phone number allocation) will be able to transfer a number to or from another company.. At least in theory! :-)

TCL & Telecom have had a call forwarding system for many years however this is not true portability.

Then I'm talking about a call forwarding between TCL and Xnet. Smile Is it possible?

Slight OT but are is their any info available online detailing the requirements of carriers yet? Are there going to be imposed time limits for carriers to port numbers and are all carriers that are members of the number deed going to be ready for the 1st April?

There is documentation but not for general publication and doesn't really have any relevance outside the Carrier / Service provider world, Carriers / Service providers are required to be ready on the 1st April, (this is non negotiable date :) the Minister will have us all if it's not delivered Innocent). We have been heavily involved as a Carrier in this process and one of our team has this pretty well under control . yes the scope of works cover's timetables for porting , processing the whole works , major testing will begin straight after Christmas we don't believe their will be any issues on our side, I can't answer for the others , we have actually been ready technically for quite some time, now it will be just processes.

Hope this answers your query

The fowarding arrangement that is used at the moment is useless because your outbound calls go out with your new telco's number on it. I asked italk about setting my outbound caller ID to my mobile number, so that people would see it as me calling from my mobile. I couldnt even get them to understand what I wanted and they thought I wanted call fowarding to my mobile.

Once the portability hits, then I will hopefully be porting my landline numbers to italk (perhaps wxc if they have asterisk connectability in time) and then finally sayonara telecom.

Yep, that's my plan as well (via WxC).  No point in doing it just yet because I would need to reprint stationery, business cards etc.  Sayonara Telecom will be a good feeling... Cool.

We will be pushing hard on Asterisk, and is one of my prime focuses for part of my group next year
