I'm in the market for VoIP hardware to use with VFX.

heres my current set up:

                                                            2 Notebook's on 802.11g
                                                                            |
                                                                       Wireless
                                                                            |
Motorola SB4100 Cable Modem >>>>> Belkin Pre-N Wireless Router
                                                                            |
                                                                       Wireless
                                                                            |
                                                            2 Desktop's on 802.11g

What would be my best option? I've never used VoIP before so I'm unsure on what to do but I would like to be able to make and receive calls away from my computer(s).

Hi

I have a Linksys WAG54G ADSL 4-Port 10/100Mbps Switch 802.11b/g Wireless, it's a good adsl modem/wireless/voip router. You can use it with VFX and with FreeCall at the same time as it has 2 phone plugins. If you get one with the VFX sticker on it, it is already setup to work with them. The only thing is VFX has this really annoying feature that it wipes the 2nd phone setup unless you call WXC and ask them to lock it down. You can get around this annoying feature by holding down the reset button for 10 or so secs.  On top of all these handy features it also can support ADSL 2 when it comes out.

Just looked again at your setup, it looks like you are with Telstra for your broadband, if this is the case you can use Linksys pap2 which is only voip and it shouldn't be too hard to incorporate it into your setup. I don't have one of these but I am sure someone here can give you advice about it.

Good luck

First off, you need to have a spare Ethernet port available on your Belkin Wireless Router.  If you don't have any spare ports, you will need to buy a hub or switch (a cheap 4-port model would be plenty).

So, assuming that you have an Ethernet port available, your simplest and cheapest option for getting VFX working is to buy a Linksys PAP2T (cost around $100 or less).  In saying that, I am assuming that you don't need to send any faxes.  If you do, then buy a Linksys SPA2102 instead (cost around $130).

The PAP2T is simpler to set up and works brilliantly for voice calls.  I have sent the odd fax through it, but it's not as reliable as the SPA2102.

Dick Smith Electronics should have both of these devices available, or you can find various people on Trade Me who sell them.

P.S.  You will also need a standard telephone (or cordless phone) to plug into whichever device you choose.  Line Rental is free until July thanks to the good guys at WxC Smile

You could sell your Belkin Router and buy a WRTP54G. I am using this with Wired Country. I have had it a month and it has been rock solid. There has been one user on this forum with issues with it. I don't know if it was the Cable service or the router itself though.

Cheers.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

I've got a WRTP54G available if you want to buy it.  Bought it off TradeMe but the guy sent me the wrong one.  Should have been WAG54GP2, and he is not replying to my e-mails.  However I have all his details including phone number and age, so will be in contact soon.  However, if you are still looking for one I can sell it to you for cheap.
