I'm signed up to the vfx service now and have got email with my login details. However there is a bit I don't understand. It says to set up the router i need to :

To setup your Residential Linksys Device please enter the following Link in the Profile Rule under the provisioning Section of your Linksys Device setup, save the configuration and then power cycle the device. If you have any problems with this please contact our Support team who will be happy to assist you with any issues.

I cannot seem to find the provisioning section in the router config. Also under the voice (http://192.168.1.1/admin/voice/) it asks for a uid and pw but my main router uid/pw combo don't seem to work.

Many apologies if I'm being thik but I'm sure I've looked under every menu on the router.

Thanks
Preet

if you can not get into that part of the router then you will not have to put that in as it is already done, if you have the EMail from us all yopu should need to do is repower your router and it will provision itself,

after a couple of minutes you should have a Green LED on line 1 , you will then be all set up and good to go , if not ring into our support line 0800144357 (080014HELP) and they can assist you

The VFX devices are locked to prevent you changing any of the critical settings that could affect the VFX service.

How does affect my security? Who can control my router?

Thanks

It doesn't affect your security at all.  You still have access to all the IP settings, just not the Voice settings which are critical to the correct operation of VFX.

If there is some specific thing you want changed -- such as LED settings or Ring Type -- ask Maverick and he will possibly do it for you, depending on exactly what your request is.

The way that the VFX servers control the Voice settings of your router is this:

*  A profile is downloaded by the Provisioning Server when you first connect
*  This profile contains all the Voice settings, and also determines exactly which functions are locked out
*  For example, you can request for WxC to unlock Line 2 (so you can use another VoIP provider) and they will do it
*  Your router checks every few hours for an updated profile at the Provisioning Server
*  If an updated profile is available, it will be downloaded automatically
*  You can also force an update check by Power Cycling your router

I hope that makes it clearer for you.  Really, there isn't anything to worry about! Smile

The only part that is locked down is the Voice Settings, you have control over Security and all other settings

WxC is not the only company in the world doing it, however I believe they are one of few companies that would unlock the second line without any questions.  In fact, my unit was unlocked when I got it and when I entered the provisioning URL it was only line 1 that got locked down.  It is also my understanding that when you close the account they will unlock it for you (again simply done over the internet), but I can not think of any reason why anyone would ever want to close their VFX account ;-)

The provisioning is done every 3 minutes, you can see in the voice screen when the next provisioning will occur.

The only security risk I can think of, is that WxC can update the firmware on your router.  However, you will surely agree that this is a great feature and not a security risk!  Again, this is standard practice with this class of device and no real security risk unless WxC screws up which they won't.

Suggestion to WxC, there should be some info on this in the FAQ section of your web site so people do not get surprised by it.

Niel: The provisioning is done every 3 minutes, you can see in the voice screen when the next provisioning will occur.

What you are referring to here is REGISTRATION which is a different process than Provisioning.

Basically it is the ATA saying to VFX:

*  Hey, I'm still here, keep my connection alive, ports open etc
*  If this Registration Message isn't received for some time, VFX will divert your calls to Voice Mail automatically

You made a good point about Line 2 unlocking too Niel, I wasn't aware of that.  I just presumed that other VoIP providers might be obliging in a similar way to WxC Smile

Registration, yes, you are right.  Is it Friday yet?

There is a company in the US (Vonage?) which I believe does not do any unlocking at all.  I have read a lot of complaints about them, it means your hardware is indefinately tied to their system.

Ok thanks everyone. I'll powercycle it then. Anyone know how I can get my voice messages via the internet if I'm not at at a phone?

Mucho gracias

First of all you need to enable Forwarding of your Voice Mail messages to E-mail.

Give me a yell if you can't figure out how to do it.  Then you just log in to your e-mail either via a Mail Client or via your ISP's Web Mail page.  Listen to the .WAV file via Windows Media Player or whatever program you use.  Easy as that!

Cheers,
Grant.

If you go into voice portal then messaging then voice management, then select carbon copy, put in your EMail address and you will then get a COPY of the message...This is only a COPY the message will still stay in VOicemail until you delete it.

The message you are getting now is a Notify which is letes you know all callers that have dialed your number
