Finally made the switch from the old digital STB to a T-Box.  Didn't want to but it's required as part of the cable package now.

The installer had kittens when he saw the mess of wiring behind my TV which supports the TV, PC, PS3, Popcorn Hour, Sony BD player, Google TV box and VCR(!). Anyway to his credit he got it all going and now I can compare the picture between Freeview and the T-Box. While watching TV3 news tonight it was quite apparent that the T-Box picture was darker than the Freeview source. I can't adjust the brightness because it then makes all other sources too bright and there does not seem to be an adjustment on the T-Box for picture brightness/contrast. Are others experiencing this or is it just my TV (Panasonic 60" plasma).

The non Freeview channels still look terrible e.g. Food, Discovery etc. Having the T-Box and HDMI versus composite video to the TV has not made much difference!

But one nice thing I discovered is that the IR codes for changing channels on the old digital STB are the same as for the T-Box. That means my GBPVR setup still works for blasting channel changes to the STB without having to learn new codes.

One might ask why I am still recording externally rather than use the T-Box. Well it's because I want to watch the recorded content anywhere on the network, not just from the T-Box at that TV.

I just got a t-box and can't believe how terrible the SD channels look - ie. Food TV, Choice TV, Heartland etc. Even HD movies don't look HD (but the HD movie preview channel does) :/

SD channels have always been vulgar quality. No watching of the SD channels in my house and never will be. I watch about one program per year on Prime because of this. A few years ago TelstraClear had a stack of Sky decoders feeding composite out to their encoders. Seriously all  the channels were so bad I'm not sure why anyone paid for such a service or how they even thought of offering such a debauchery and calling it digital cable, defies belief this ever happened but unfortunately I've seen these decoders in person.

Sky encode all their channels. We just pass them through.

The movie preview channel is encoded by Vodavone.

Hope this explains :)

Yes and those were also removed several years ago too. The channels are pass-through now so same quality as Sky DVB-S

Can't you complain to Sky that SD channels are below acceptable broadcast standard.

Sky don't care.. The only thing they care about is people paying their bill each month.

STB's with analogue outputs are a little bit forgiving on some of those SD Channels.. a natural analogue output 'softness' filter. ;-)  But that's all old hat now.

The harsh reality is that HDMI shows all manner of things.. including compression artifacts, more clearly.

Cheers,

Surely vodafone could get a connection to sky upstream of their encoding to get a better quality feed of it? Is it as bad on the UFB TV product?

I thought Vodafone was given a fiber feed from Sky TV directly? Is it still the satellite signal injected into the cable/ufb product?

Cable still relies on the DVB-S feed... But that may change in future.

As an aside, since this is originally a T-Box subject, I am finding the response time of the unit painfully slow. To change channels (even if you press al 3 digits) takes seconds. Is this normal?

I have worked with several STB and PVR before and this is the slowest I have ever seen them.

Also why do they still need the modem? You would think they could put the modem into the unit itself if that wanted two-way interaction. That was just one more thing the installer had to cable in, find room for and for me, find a power outlet.

I always thought this was the case, When we used to have the analogue surfview box, occasionally there would be sky box errors on the screen haha, and yeah the quality was absolutely terrible!

We've gotten used to T-Box and how slow it is (not as bad as I thought), but if Voda were to bring out a flash new box we would be upgrading! Haha

I wonder if they can lower the lag on the existing one though
