Hi,

A couple months ago last year Vodafone released something saying that within a month they will be releasing Smartpass, but it is still not out. When or if is it coming out?

Thanks

Hmmm, had to Google it... http://www.vodafone.co.nz/press-release/introducing-vodafone-smartpass-a-new-wave-of-mobile-payment/

Introducing Vodafone SmartPass - a new wave of mobile payment
06 September 2013
Vodafone, Visa and BNZ make buying stuff with your phone a reality today with the preview of Vodafone SmartPass, a new mobile payments application that will shrink the contents of Kiwi pockets and handbags. Vodafone SmartPass takes the stress out of shopping, and lets customers make convenient, every day purchases with a simple wave of a smartphone.

Using contactless Near Field Communication (NFC) and Visa payWave technology, the app functions as a digital wallet.  Once activated, customers can load funds from any bank to the SmartPass account, which can then be used to pay for items at any location with a Visa payWave contactless terminal.

Sounds similar to the Telecom/Auckland Transport/Westpac/Mastercard trials that are (still???) in progress.

(Edit: changed 'like' to 'similar to' for clarity)

There's a video on the Vodafone YouTube channel that demos it, looks pretty cool.

Will it be available only for "Select Samsung Devices" like every other mobile payment application?

IIRC the trial devices were the HTC One (M7) & the i9305, so wouldn't imagine it's limited to Samsung only. :)

Both the Vodafone Smartpass trials and the Telecom (Don't know what brandname) trials both as I understand it involve at the end of the day Paymark (which handle just about all of NZ's EFTPos transactions), and they alongside 2D have setup TSM NZ (http://www.tsmnz.co.nz/)

Who is TSM NZ?
TSM NZ is an independent company founded by shareholders Paymark (owned by ANZ, ASB, BNZ and Westpac), Telecom New Zealand, 2degrees and Vodafone New Zealand. We are currently developing exciting technology that will enable Kiwis to perform a range of everyday functions on their smartphone. Functions such as making payments, collecting loyalty points and using public transport. Some are calling this technology a mobile wallet – our product will be like a wallet, but also so much more.

i.e. at the end of the day, Smartpass/Telecom's thing/2D's thing/whomever's thing/... is all going to function the same because if this TSM NZ does it's job, it's all going to be standardized like the EFTPoS network.

(Disclaimer:  Not involved with the trials just info derived from public websites, someone that is want to confirm that what I've said is still the case?)
