This is probably not the most appropriate forum for this topic, but I'm an Xnet customer so it's kind of related

Anyway.

Can anyone point me in the right direction (or at least give me some steps to check) to figure out why downloading from Usenet should suddenly stop working. I have exchanged about 20 emails with my usenet server provider and they're basically saying its nothing wrong with their end so it must be at my end. Really helpful!

I have tried downloading various files using an array of Newsreader clients, and each time the newsreader makes the connections, authorises the connections, but then times out before any of the files actually download? I'm stumped.

All help greatly appreciated.

Traffic shaping perhaps? as int'l bandwidth is running tight! Would be nice to know if this is the case.

No shaping going on as far as I'm aware.

I haven't been informed of any changes to the network which could cause issues with Usenet.  You haven't made any changes locally to your network?  I'll run this past the Operations team just in case.

Should be fine on this front at the moment too, int'l bandwidth is no longer running tight.

Hi Cameronn, thanks for the post

No local changes have been made (intentionally at least). Speeds on port 119 have dried up completely to the point that I can't maintain a connection to a Usenet server and alternative ports peak at 25kbps when port 119 had been happily chugging along at 250-300 before. I've tried this at 5 or 6 different times of the day and still no luck. Done all the usual reboots of pc/router etc several times.

I'll investigate the Issue internally - I'm not sure if you're aware but we also have a news service for Xnet customers.

news.xnet.co.nz - no auth required.

The news server is classified as local - doesn't count towards your data cap :)

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

I've passed the details through to Operations, there is nothing blatantly obvious which could be causing the issue - I'll see if I can get an update.

Well, I am none the wiser but the problem seems to have righted itself. Thanks for looking into this Cameronn. All seems well now but I remain absolutely clueless as to what caused (and fixed) the problem.

I'm as clueless as you are at the moment, good to hear it's fixed though :)
