Hi all,

First thing (OT) - I cannot type in the message area in Safari. Oh well, Camino works.

The VOiP option is new to me. I only discovered the options because Telecom wanted to charge $500 for a new connection. There's a whole world of possibilities now. Beauty! I've decided to sign up with xnet vfx (with broadband and discounted vfx) because it's cheaper than Skype Pro. That was the easy decision. The difficult one is hardware - so many options.

Say I go with the unlocked linksys pap2t from http://nicegear.co.nz. I could then plug in my regular phones right? End of story?

I want to keep my costs down because I'm about to go freelance and don't know what my income is going to be. After a while, I'l happily purchase higher-end as money allows.

A question about using the pap2t and a regular phone: will the regular phone that has a screen show caller id etc? Would I be able to use the handset to access VFX voicemail and other enhanced services?

If not: I've seen the philips cordless skype phones that have all the skype abilities built in. Is there a similar product for VFX?

a PAP2T is fine for if you have a router already with switch ports, Caller ID should work no problem at all as well, Skype is a similar product it uses their own proprietary version VOIP product

The PAP2T is a great starter. Later you could go for a SPA942 IP desk phone. Don't know when, but hopefully sometime down the track there will be a good cordless (DECT) IP phone option; but unfortunately nothing like this on the horizon for VFX just yet.
Oh and the difference between an "unlocked" PAP2T and a VFX ready, is just the latter has been preconfigured for "plug & play" on VFX (so no need to enter the provisioning link).

Okay. Thanks for the replies. I found a pap2t + a nice looking pots handset (doro, I think) at dick smith. that'll get me going.

Just another tip, keep away from 2,4GHz cordless phones (Uniden do one that is quite popular). They are a nightmare with wireless, even if you don't have wireless now, you may later.
I think the Doro's, and many of the Panasonic DECT phones don't use 2.4GHz, so you should be OK; but would be a good idea to check anyway.

All DECT phones are 1.8GHz and are fine with wireless routers.  (And don't worry about Bluetooth, it is designed to work around frequencies used by other devices.)  Doro is a good brand.  Panasonic is also good, but I find them a bit on the old-looking side.  Doro has a nice waterproof one which I would love to get if I was using the phone more (it actually looks like a cell phone).  Uniden is popular but junk.

The preconfigured devices are cheaper, but you simply ask WxC and they will unconfigure it for you.  They believe their service is so good that you do not need a 24 month contract or end up with a locked device.  It is simply while you use the service that the one port is locked to their settings so you can not degrade the service.  The second port is still open and you can use it to sign up to any other (or same) VoBB service.

Uniden were popular and were once good but i'd avoid them like the plague now, nothing but utter trouble with eveythone whom has used them of recent. I have a box full of the things.

Uniden DECT phones aren't too bad and their 5.8GHz stuff can be OK as well. Their 2.4GHz stuff however is terrible from personal experience can not only cause serious issues with your WiFi if you use it at home but can also suffer from call breakup if you (or even neighbours) have a WiFi router.

I agree that you may not have issues with these. Every setup is different, but from general experience, the more competing stuff you have on the same frequencies, then the more susceptible it will be to having issues.
Same applies for using a true IP phone Vs an ATA plus standard phone. There are much less variables affecting a true IP phone, but at the same time there will be many rock solid ATA + standard phone setups too.

Let me clarify, the hardware assembly quality of Uniden is not very good.  It is average (okay), but for only a little more you can get a good quality Doro or Panasonic.  And from the replies we can clearly see how popular Uniden is!

Telecom is also popular and most people will say they do not have problems with them (except the recent bubble thing), however it does not mean that Telecom is good.  But let's not go there, I'm just making a point.

We have 2x Uniden WDECT 2.4Ghz phones in the house and a Wifi AP serving 5 laptops. We are in an apartment block and also pick up 5 other AP's in the vicinity. We have never had any problems with the phones or WiFi even when using both 2.4Ghz phones at the same time
