Just wondering, why is all the provisioning pages on the pap2t blocked once vfx configure it, and why don't vfx allow standard sip login so that we can use what ever device we want to? I mean -it wouldn't be dificult to figure out what it's doing, just watch where it's connecting to, pan.wxnz.net or something, spoof the mac address on a pc, get the pass out of the device but why would we have to bother going to so much effort? most other voip providers encourage normal sip access???

This has been explained numerous times on here by World Exchange. While plenty of providers do allow you to use your own device and settings many also do not. By not letting people change their settings the end user is assured that all SIP settings are correct and that they can't fiddle with anything that can break either the VFX network or cause trouble for themselves such as being billed for calls that don't register disconnect's properly etc. If you have a PAP2 or SPA2102 (or similair) the 2nd line is unlocked.

VFX will more than likely be supporting Asterisk in the future and there are a few people on here (myself included) who are trialling this at present.

VoIP and especially SIP is one of those things that the more you know about it, you realize the less you understand it. As pointed out by another member, SIP is actually made up of 45 RFC’s! making sure that there is always more than one way to do things.

Anyone with a few smarts can configure a PAP2 or other ATA to a sip provider. However, to get the perfect and dependable voice quality that you get from the VFX service requires real skill. They guys at WxC know their stuff and provide a pretty awesome service.
For WxC to open up their gateway to all and sundry would a. risk the integrity of their gateway(s) and b. increase the cost of solving issues. At present when you call up with a voice problem they are working with a KNOWN configuration. This enables them to quickly identify and solve issues. As sbiddle pointed out, WxC are working on an asterisk trial at present which is looking very promising and is providing the same fantastic Voice quality. Also somewhere in here you find an excellent post from maverick talking about the reasoning behind the limitation of devices to be connected to the Network.
