Is this device SIM locked to another operator?

What error is displayed on screen when the phone is turned on?
Does the SIM work in another phone?

Sounds like it's SIM locked. Best thing is to make sure the Vodafone SIM is working in another phone. If it works ok, then the phone is most likely SIM locked to the Indian provider.

The Vodafone sim card I have got is a 3g one and it wrks in other mobiles .
I also tried using the other type of sim card from vodafone and the mobile doesn't seems to recognize it and
repeatedly i am getting the same error message as "Insert sim".
Also could you please advise me on how to unlock if in case the mobile is locked to only Indian service providers ?

You will need to contact the Provider in India that you purchased the phone from, they will be able to give you an unlock code for your phone - usually at a cost. Most providers have this via their website, or you'll need to call their customer services.

Which provider did you purchase the phone from?

I bought this mobile from Sony ericsson show room in India.
So do I need to go back (call back the place where I bought the mobile)
to check with them for the unlock code for the mobile ?

Can't we get it done frm here itself ?

I did checked with the Sony showroom in Wellington and they said they wont do that ?
Is there any other place where I can check out ?

I use a W850i here in NZ, bought from Hong Kong.  No problems.

To try whether it's SIM locked, simply slot your old India Simcard into the slot.  It might not have roaming, but you should still be able to enter into the main phone menu, but just not get a signal (other than for emergency).

Yep you were right. I used an Indian sim card and I am able to
enter the phone menu and its recognising the indian sim card.

Is there any means of unlocking the mobile phone from here(NZ) itself ?

If you're in Wellington, theres a shop in that building... uh... gosh i can't remember <_< ... JAMES SMITH!

But yeah, SE's simlocks aren't just a simple code. They're locked within the firmware. You can do it yourself for a price using something like wotanserver or davinci (theres a few others, www.se-nse.net will help you out, sign up on the forum and post a question or just do some snooping).

There are free solutions but you CAN RENDER YOUR PHONE COMPLETELY USELESS doing that. You can render your phone useless with wotan/etc but it is a lot more safe since the program code is more professional whereas programs like XS++ are made by professionals but there isn't exactly a customer base/etc and its really designed for customising.

Its simple once you know how to do it, the first time's always really weird/hard so only do what you think is safest.

If you have the cable (DCU-60?) and you're trying to get it quick, go with something like Wotan, its not the cheapest option but i'm sure if you found anyone in NZ they'd charge you that ballpark figure.
