Hi,

I am curious as to why Telstra dont provide a option for a wireless router as part of their broadband package.?

While my needs are pretty basic for a wired Desktop and remote laptop, it would have been nice to be able to purchase the whole setup out of the box with appropriate help desk service.

As it is, it took me a lot of reading and free time I dont have to settle on a WGR614 v7 NetGear wireless router which has been flacky from the day I installed it i.e. needing regular power reboots.

Apart from the fact that I had trepidation about registering all my private security details on the provided Netgear URL address which I assume isnt resident in the router.??

Cheers

PS - it just cost Telstra 20 minutes help desk time to figure out it was my  NetGear router problem rather than their fault - sorry guys.

regarding your security details, if they were on a website something like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 or 10.1.1.1 then it was on the router that your were entering your details - nowhere else....so rest easy.

Even if a standard solution was provided the helpdesk still have to provide assistance with the MAC filtering and encryption side of things for the uninitiated. My guess is that TCL helpdesk doesn't want this extra work. Way easier to let the initiated buy and install their own solutions.

As for your Netgear (good reputation), if its WAN interafce is currently configured to receive an address from the ADSL modem via DHCP then this may be causing the disconnections, make sure that the WAN interface has static credentials, e.g., IP address (on same subnet as ADSL modem LAN interface), subnet mask, gateway (address of your ADSL modem LAN interface) and DNS addresses.

http://www.telstraclear.co.nz/residential/homeplan/internet/pdq/modems.cfm

But this only appies to PDQ. In the cable areas, ony the cable modem is supplied - but the helpdesk is fairly good at giving you the right settings to use in a wireless router, it's a common request.

People reckon that D-Link equipment is rubbish, but I have a DI-524 hanging off my cable and I've never had any trouble with it at all. It serves couple of wired desktops and a few wireless machines. Never had to reboot it that I can remember.

Thanks for prompt responses - much appreciated.

I agree it would cost Telstra but I am sure there are people like me that would pay a premium for it.
Maybe a combined modem - router would be simpler for them.
Then again the 50minute help desk wait is a off putter.

Regarding your comments:
"regarding your security details, if they were on a website something like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 or 10.1.1.1 then it was on the router that your were entering your details - nowhere else....so rest easy. "

Dunno - you login to the router settings at  http://www.netgear.com/Extranet/loginpage.aspx so what the URL?? numbers of this interpret as I am not sure.

I'll try resetting up the router and use the reset button on back.
This was the way I thought I had set it up but I cannot get into it now (maybe because I disconneected the sod)

D-Link 524 too since day 1 and no hiccup. Funny, I've read and see some TCL Cable customers wanting to use with wireless router and many chose Netgear or LinkSys or Belkin, some of these devices require the use of MAC clone to function, while with my D-Link 524 (and with any D-Link routers if I might add), and entering the right IP address/gateway/DNSes and all are working as expected. Not quite so easy for other brands though.
