What is the general opinion on the accuracy of speedtest.net?

I am a XNET ADSL customer and previously the best download speed I could achieve was 1982kb/s. I was led to believe that I was connected through conklin device which has a limit of 2mb/s so that explained my connection speed.

Tonight, I have tried three tests using speedtest.net and received throughput values ranging from 1980 kb/s through to 3226 kb/s all using the WorldXChange server as the test source.  So, if the figure of 3226 kb/s is accurate, then clearly I am not connected through a conklin after all.

Hence the question, is speedtest.net a reliable measure of connection speed?

Cheers Mike

Consider it an indication only, not a 'test measurement tool'.

So many factors can influence speed tests, you will see that if you sit there for 5 minutes doing nothing but speed tests, the results will probably vary (quite dramatically in many cases).

The most accurate speed test for xnet would be there own server: http://speedtest.xport.co.nz/
This will give you your "theoretical" maximum speed for you connection between you & xnet. Once your connection leaves xnet, there are many variations that come into play affecting your speed.

Keep in mind that as mentioned, these are just snapshots, and will vary, and should only be used as an indication.

For a more practical estimate of how well you overall speed is doing, you would use a combination of various speedtest.net's, plus some large downloads.

Thanks Gents (and for the link),

I guess that I am not especially concerned about the actual speed so much as whether the reading of 3.2mb/s could be close to reality. If that is so, then clearly I am not connected through a Conklin which has a limit of 2 mb/s.

PS Coffeebaron, looking at your avatar, it could be that you are serious about coffee! If so, do you know anything about bean grinding. If so I will PM you as I have a Rocket E61 and a Mini Macho grinder that I need to get under control!!!  Sorry for going off topic.

Cheers Mike

Oh just slightly :) PM me with what you would like to know, & I'll have a few coffees, then get back to you.
