Hello all.

What a fantastic forum you have going here!

Anyway, I am needing a little advice. I will be signing up for Xnet Fusion as soon as it is available. At present I am using a D-Link 504G ADSL Modem/Router, and a Belkin Wireless access point. I was goiong to plash out on a Linksys WAG54GP2v2, but as we are on a strict budget, I might have to settle for a PAP2T.

Two questions:
1.  My ADSL Modem/Router does not support QoS. Would this be an issue in regards to voice quality? I am happy to throttle any downloads that I may have running, but we are not heavy "downloader" anyway.

2. My ADSL Modem/Router does not support ADSL2. Will Fusion support ADSL or ADSL2?

Thanks,

Donald

I had a WAG54GP2V2 (what a mouthful!), and didnt like it, it was flaky (but firmware should have been upgraded since.

Have been using a PAP2T till recently moving the Asterisk offering they have, and dont use QoS. I am on Go Large, and there is always little bits of traffic in and out of various computers here, but phone quality is always perfect.

Your results may vary, but I suspect you would be happy with PAP2T only, if your Skype calls are okay.

PS - I am on Xtra - so all my calls have to get to WxC first, and they are still good quality...

I have a second-hand PAP2T for sale here if you want one:

We have a FS/FS connection at our office running 2 x VFX lines and we don't use any QoS.  It works just fine in our experience although being a business, we don't have any Bit Torrent downloads happening.  Because you have similar usage, I don't expect you would have any problems either.

knightrider: 2. My ADSL Modem/Router does not support ADSL2. Will Fusion support ADSL or ADSL2?

It depends on your exchange, and whether it has been upgraded yet.  The Fusion plan enables Full Speed downloads and uploads i.e. the Fastest Speed your line is capable of.  What speed that is depends on various factors including:

1)  Whether your exchange has been upgraded
2)  How far you are from the exchange
3)  The quality of your line in regards to crosstalk and number of joints
4)  Your modem

If you are more than 3km or so from the exchange, upgrading to ADSL2 is unlikely to make much difference.

Xnet prioritise VFX traffic at their network level (flash new network toys they have), so having a non QoS router will work fine (so long as your broadband is through Xnet of course).

This works very well. I currently have a non-QoS router (not really an issue for FS/FS and if you have control over what's happening on your connection). Recently, I was hit by some intermittent issue that applied a throttle to my connection and pulled me down to about 256/128'ish. I made 2 simultaneous VFX calls G711 codec, and the calls did not miss a beat. The rest of my connection though ground to a complete halt, even MSN couldn't stay logged in. So yes, very effective QoS applied at Xnet.

My network guys will be glad thier smarts and toys are working well on this for you and is a pretty good example of how VFX traffic is treated within our core, they are still working on the throttling issue and will solve it but they will be pleased you like their work

Is a big advantage too for migrating my customers to Xnet Fusion. A lot of older non-QoS routers can now stay = less $$ needed for hardware.

Now if only I can solve the on going QoS issues for my customer in Laingholm, (only been since April), but that's another long story, not for this thread.

I am curious as to what these "smarts & toys" are or rather what they cannot do Wink

but I appreciate that this is secret stuff Laughing

I do note you say it is a good example of how VFX traffic is treated "within our core" Wink

Will VFX be free to Xnet HSI customers who don't go to Fusion ?

ps: I signed up another customer for you guys yesterday bring on that credit Smile

Yep sorry won't be discussing this in a public forum for obvious reasons Wink,

Fusion is a bundled package so it's a combined price for the Line (Naked DSL), Voice and Internet

What I mean is that the VFX cost is currently waivered for Xnet customers, will that continue when Fusion is released

That would allow me to use VFX whilst continuing for the present to use POTS and River for the same cost as Fusion until I [or rather my wife] is comfortable with with VoIP
