This is a very unfortunate post in that I am trying to provide some support for a friend who is terminally ill.  To try to keep him 'connected' to the world (he has MND) we have a Surface Pro 3 that is using specialist software and input (through a forehead mounted reflective spot monitored by a camera).  The software is not new and relies on connectivity for SMS through an old phone, I am advised a Sony Erickson K610i PRC is the only one the software can connect through.  Does anyone know where I can source one?  Maybe someone from Vodafone, who used to stock them monitors this forum and can help.  I have found one on Ebay but as it's the US I have to get it shipped and time is currently pretty precious.

An alternate is trying to find a reliable App that we can install on the Surface that he can use to send SMS to local numbers.  I didn't think this would be as hard as it is to sort out.  Any help very gratefully appreciated.

I have a tetraplegic friend who does amazing things with his computer to keep in touch with the outside world. I know he would help. How can I get your details so I can pass them on to him.

I've searched around and haven't found that exact model, but I have a K770i here you can have, which I believe should have the same software capabilities. Send me a private message with your address details or if you're in Auckland you can pick it up from us in the Viaduct.

Just trying to charge it now. Connection via charging cable seems a bit dodgy, so you may want to give it a miss. But it's yours if you want it

I have a charger here for the K770i which I assume might fit...? :)

No idea :-) The phone I have doesn't seem to have a wall charger, but instead charges via a USB cable with proprietary connector. This connector seems to sit quite loosely into the phone, and the slightest movement halts charging. Click to see full size

Hey many thanks for the repsonses.

To Lemuzz:  thanks for the offer, I'm working through Talklink who are NZ SMEs and may well have helped you're friend.  It's a bit crazy in that this is a bit bigger than just my friend because 'DTSL Assistive technology' are the organisation that develop / install the software and they can only use that phone.  They have advised that the main provider of the software in the UK are trialing other phones but it seems crazy restrictive that they're looking at platform specific.

To Dylan:  Many thanks for the offer, I'm waiting to confirm with DTSL whether the 770i will work but I am being advised that it's only the 760I and it's very specific, again this seems crazy.  I'll email you once I've heard back but once again thanks for the offer.

To dclegg:  Many thanks for trying and I may call on you.

For all:  I have posted a seperate message on the PC forum regarding the issue and had a bit of a lightbulb moment that might help DTSL in the longterm.  Last night I trialed a Vodem/Dongle in my Surface (which I fortunatley have and also had an old dongle) and I think this will work if I use a powered USB hub.  I am arranging to have the dedicated machine delivered back to me today to try that option on it and this may give a long term answer to all who require.

Again thanks for all the offers of help.

Hi Mark,

Just followed the thread, and can offer a SE v600i, K750i or k800i, though they may not really be compatible as mentioned above.

I have though just contacted a friend who is happy to offer an excellent condition K610i. It's not the PRC model, which I assume might be a particular firmware revision, but it is a NZ Vodafone sold unit. I'll try and pick it up from her tonight or tomorrow, clean it up, and can courier it through to you and your friend. Hopefully that will be able to work.

If you send me a PM with your postal/courier details, I'll see if I can get that sent away to you.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Cheers,
Yann
