Hi.  I've been with TelstraClear (Vodafone) for about 5 years, but want to upgrade my modem.

Any recommendations on what to get?

Cheers :)

What/why do you want to upgrade?

  • better wireless coverage? wireless ac?
  • faster ethernet? gigabit ports?
  • better user interface (GUI)?
  • the option of upgrading to VDSL?

There is a huge range of ADSL/VDSL modems, so it would be helpful to know what you want/need.

Stability: The connection sometimes cuts out, and I need to re-start the modem to get things working again

Better wireless and ethernet would be a bonus.

The option to upgrade to VDSL makes sense, though internet speed is not a problem at the moment. (fibre is still two years away)

Budget - looking for sub $200.

Assuming that you want a one-box modem/router:

Most of my recommendations are over your budget.

I'd go for:

ASUS DSL-AC52U ADSL/VDSL,Modem Router w/ Dual-Band Wireless-AC750, 1x Gigabit Wan, 4x Gigabit Lan, 1x USB,(Fibre Ready) - Great Wireless Coverage with 4 High Gain External Antenna  $219

Below $200:

The Bigpipe Modem is a Huawei HG659. $99 on joining.

See: The router guide - what is best

EDIT:  All this is assuming that your ADSL drop-outs are due to the modem - it may be a house wiring problem.
