Hi,

Just though tI'd share my experience becuase I know a few others out there are considering the same thing.  I've been wondering whether to upgrade my bb to BigPipe but I've been with vodafone cable for 6 years, so I thought I'd just take the plunge and upgrade to their FibreX Max option.  The Vodafone rep explained to me that it's not actually Fibre, but upgraded cable (so why use the word Fibre on the product name???).  Anyway she said they will send a tech over withing 3 days to upgrade the modem.  She explained that i can sign up to the 24 month plan - where they give you 1/2 price for the first 6 months, or the 12 months plan.  I chose 12 months plan. They offered me $10 p/m discount because i have a Vodafone cell phone, and then she said I can have another $10 off (for no apparent reason - win!) bringing the monthly price to $89 for near gigabit speeds - excellent.

I'll obviously I'll running some speeds tests and report back (I'm in Wellington). Is the Auckland server the best one to use?  If anyone wants me to do another speeds tests or anything just let me know (I'm only semi technical, so go easy!)

If it's not great I'll move to Bigpipe in 12 months but I imagine it will be very fast.

Is there anything i should know in advance, or do with regards to tweaking my new set up? Cheers

Would have made more sense to go to 200/20 ....

Really? But that's slower (not slow, granted - but slower).  I can change it, I only just called them an hour ago.  May i ask why 200/20 would make more sense?

Fibre X Max (700-900) is $20 more than Fibre X 200 (200/20). Seemed worth it to me?

97% of users have zero use for 1Gbp/s, Most only like going to the speedtest.net server

HFC is fibre to the Node and then coax to Modem, Like the copper network fibre to the cabinet then copper to the modem

I do fibre for a job and I would suggest the same gig is not guaranteed it will more than likely only guaranteed for 2.5mbps which is enough for voice. Unless u are full time torrenting or have a house full constantly watching streamed tv it's just a bit over hyped. For the extra 20 a month you more than likely won't see much benefit. Even 100/20 is decent for any average household.

Gbit pays if you have a lot of Users using your connection at the same time.

Thanks for all your comments, really appreciated.  I've actually decided to NOT go ahead with Fibre X now.  This is based on that I'm not convinced that in real world it'll actually be faster than my 130/10 current connection.

I might go for BigPipe fibre 200/20 instead - I've only ever heard good things about them.

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

FibreX also has a plan for 200/20 and is much cheaper than fibre. Good to have so many choices.

Well i guess you are wasting an extra $20 per month unless you need more than 20mbps upload. (which you probably dont really have much use for anyway).
