I have an old Telecom 'CompactPhone 100' telephone (it has actual bells inside!) that stopped being able to ring a long time ago - apart from this it works fine. Does anyone know how to make a simple ringer that I could place in, say, a modified double adapter that would ring when a call comes through?

Thanks

It will need the ringer wire connected. Hook it to a 2 wire socket and run the phoneline into that.

Also bell ringers wouldnt work on my ATA, it just dinged and then thought the line was answered.

The bell circuitry inside it stopped working many years ago, that's why I'd like to make a seperate ringer device that I can put on the (VFX) line.

It may ring ok when given a ringer signal. No new phones and most older ones dont need it till you back to that era of phones.

Otherwise there are many plug in ones that you can get from places like dse etc, but not aware of one with a bell in it.

Wouldn't it just be easier/cheaper to buy a new phone? Or are you starting a miniature museum? Tongue out

"Used to" - I'm sure I saw one there once but they don't appear to stock it anymore.

I don't require the *bell* part (although that would be cool), just something that rings. I haven't seen anything small & simple for some years now, that's why I'd like to try the DIY route. I'm sure it's pretty simple.

Or just go to te warewhare and get a cheap phone to replace the one you have. I think they may have had a plug in ringer too.

Nothing in telephony is as simple as it seems :) If you are into DIY why not troubleshoot the faulty bells? AC ringing via the capacitor in the jack or a capacitor in the phone through the bell coil and a switch contact in the handset cradle.

Even if the electromechanical ringer worked, it is unlikely that an ATA would be able to drive enough power to ring it.  But if you just want something to ring while retaining the old phone (because you love the way it looks, or because it has a nice sound), then you can simply get a cheap new/modern phone and a double adapter so you can plug the old and the new phone into one socket on the ATA.

If for some reason you can not get a ringer from DSE, then try www.jaycar.co.nz who has a lot of novelty stuff (and staff that actually knows about electronics).

I tried with my old phone today, and my sipura will ring it, very feebly compared to a telecom line, and since its a dial phone and no atas will take pulse, you cant dial out on it.

Mind you, no worries of people going ****reset on it either ;)

DSE do have some staff that know what they are talking about. However with 80 stores as opposed to 8 that Jaycar have it is harder to find the same amount of knowledgeable electronic-minded staff. I know that if you talk to the right people at DSE there are some who know a lot more than you would think. This also comes down to the fact that staff at DSE get no incentive to get training as advanced as you are suggesting.

thats so true. When I worked there (3 years GASP!) there were a few of us studying electronics at uni, or who had engereering degrees on the go. But how long do you expect us to stay around for after we finish those qualifications concidering how much they pay... They do have some decent-ish internal training stuff you can do to get your 'grade 3' which would certainly be able to help out the average budding electrinic enthusist, but now they are just interested in stelling Ipods and TV's so any staff will do ... sigh, I'm glad I'm out.
