Fibre's heading our way soon, and we're currently on Vodafone VDSL

Huawei Modem is currently located well into the house, away from the internal access garage where fibre would most likely terminate.

All my wifi and wired connections come back to the Vodafone modem, inside the house.

I expect many would be in this situation, where their modem/wifi AP is deep inside the house, (connected back to the street copper connection point via splitter and copper phone wiring inside the house), so I'm wondering what the process is to move from say ADSL/VDSL to Fibre, where I don't want to plug everything into a new device out in the garage?

Hope that's making some sense. Not very well today...

you need to see if they can put the ONT where your router is (the hg659) they may be able to do this if there is easy access under the floor or through the roof. They generally wont run cables inside walls, but will run them on the outside in capping.

or you could have the ONT in the garage and run your own cabling to where the hg659 is.

you need to work out which one is going to work best for your situation

run your own cable inside the wall using the existing phone cable as a draw, it will be much nicer, oh and if you plan on having a phone service run two cat5e or cat6 and terminate it with a wall plate and rj45s

Thanks guys. Laying my own cables is feasible and it may well come to that.

I expect this situation would be common for many, in terms of the modem/wifi router device being central in a home with copper, and requiring some form of connection from the fiber termination to that location, or somewhere else that's suitable. In many cases, the street facing internal access garage is not particularly suitable for wifi/existing cabling etc.

Do Vodafone offer a new wifi device when you upgrade from ADSL/VDSL? Assume there is the ONT providing one (or more) Ethernet ports, but what's offered for wifi?
Or are you expected to use your existing gear (yes HG659 in my current case) as a router/wifi access point again?

the ont has ethernet ports but only one is available as you only have one internet connection. the ont is essentially just a media converter converting fibre to ethernet, and you need a router, the hg659 in your case to do the authentication and routing.

for you you would keep using the HG659 as its what they offer for fibre connections.

As a customer you could ask them about whether you are eligible to try out one of their new Ultra Home Hubs.

They will try and put the ONT near to your tv. I already had a 30 M lan cable from the computer room (hg659) to the lounge. They were happy to use that , it wasnt until they left that i realized the ont didnt work as a hub and I will have to run another 30 cable or only use wifi on the tv and other media devices in the lounge.

Mine comes into the garage, up the wall into the roof, then down through the closet back through the wall and behind the tv

Chorus wanted to place my ONT behind the TV as well. I got them to put it in the garage.

I then put a wall plate with 6 rj45's on it next to the ONT and ran 2 x cat6 cables each to my office, lounge and family room.

That wey I could place the HG659 in any of those rooms and route the ethernet back to the wall plate in the garage. Got a basic 5 port network switch to split the ethernet to the other rooms.

I've already had to move the HG659 from the office to the family room as I needed to convert the office back to a bedroom for 1 year, so running 2 x cat6's to each location allowed this flexibility.

If you can't laugh at yourself then you probably shouldn't laugh at others.
