The old T-Box allowed you to record anything on any channel you could see. 

 

The new Vodafone TV lets you record some content. According to the videos on the Vodafone website, you can record programmes with a "R" icon. 

 

Does this mean you can't record any show on TV1, TV2 and TV3? 

 

eg: Can you still series record the TV1 news on Vodafone TV?

I don't think they would limit it like that? anyway why would you record the news, when you will be able to go straight into on demand and view it from there.

because its quicker and eaiser than dealing with TVNZ interfaces and their silly adverts that keep repeating and on occasion cause you to have to start the entire show again.

The news was an example. The real question is, can it record anything on TV1, Tv2 and TV3, as with T-Box, because I'm unsure what "some content not recordable" covers.

I can't answer the OP's question because I haven't played with one yet, but I do know the period for which content is kept will also raise it's head as an issue once people realise they can't access content forever.

That's interesting, didn't realise that. I was under the impression that subscribers got a 'personal cloud' (based on their 200 hours and 500 hour recording package options).

 

Are, or will, these devices be available for demo in Vodafone shops.  I'm mildly interested in getting this service but certainly would want to try before I buy.

It's a "personal cloud" but my understanding is it's not actually duplicating the content as such - giving every customer a few hundred GB of space and having that taken up with 5000 customers recording the same show would be a waste of space when you only need a single copy of that show.

It'd be really nice if Vodafone made all this stuff, e.g. expiry, which channels can/can't be recorded, etc. explicitly clear rather than expecting people to sign up to a  1 year contract simply based on glossy marketing.

Very good point, and circles back nicely to your earlier comment about the potential controversy about not being able to keep content forever.  I wonder how many people still have a copy of the 2011RWC final on their MySky for example.

 

 

 

Next gripe, can someone elaborate on this condition:

I don't have an English degree but I thought for concurrent you'd need to have at least two of something.  Does it mean that when someone is watching on their phone it has to be the same channel as the one that is on the telly?

To confirm, you can watch a show on the Vodafone TV box and another show on one of your mobile devices. They do not have to be on the same channel.

 

You can only watch on one mobile device at a time though.

And the mobile device and Vodafone TV box need to be on the same wifi network, I think.

This does indeed appear to be the case, or at least the demo ones in the Vodafone shops in Lambton Quay and Cuba St.

 

You can go back about 4 days though to view a missed programme.  The TVNZ on-demand app is 'coming soon' but not yet implemented.

 

Another negative, when you fast forward or rewind the picture disappears, you just get a time indicator, i.e no visual cue-ing.

 

The UI is OK, nice and quick, and streams don't take too long to start up.  Picture quality is fine, at least in the Cuba St. shop, Lambton Quay is atrocious ( a lack of bandwidth thing maybe).

 

My verdict: For the sake of a $23/mnth saving I'll stick with MySky for now, but it has potential.

no you can't record anything on TV1, TV2,TV3,Prime and a lot of others I assume which I haven't tried yet. I can record Discovery and the shopping channel though.

They do limit like that and TV1 on Demand isn't available yet and who knows when it will be?

I have one of these units up and running so if you have any questions I don't mind answering.  I posted  a huge reply to a previous post on the issues I had with Vodafone re the provisioning, setup and running of the unit but I am not sure what happened to it.

 

I must admit I am unimpressed with alot of the aspects of it and in a lot of trouble with the other half after paying extra for a service and then trying to explain that they can't record any of the major channels like they use to be able to do with the T-box. I am just hoping that this isn't another T-box implementation disaster again.
