Hi,

we moved into our new pad last week, I signed us up to Naked DSL w/ VFX. Having problems with the Linksys PAP2T, phone doesnt work most of the time, and when it does the line quality is a bit poor. Emailed helpddesk and was told to look for something on my router called an "ALG and if so is there one called SIP or on port 5060, if so turn it off"

I have a Netgear router (forget the model number), couldnt find this ALG, but i did complete the rest of the helpdesk recommendation;

Also it can help to assign a static IP to your pap and then forward the VFX ports from your router to the static IP of the pap. The ports to forward are:

UDP ports 5060 - 5062 -> signaling

UDP ports 8060 - 8062 -> signaling

UDP ports 35384 - 37384 -> voice and media

It's still not working consistently.

Regardless, it's got too hard as far as my fiancé is concerned, so I am wanting to go back to a normal old analogue phone line, but keep (for now) the Xnet broadband.

Can I just go onto the Telecom site and sign up for a homeline? Will I be tied into any contract, or can I quit it at any point and move ISP with homephone line at any point?

grayskull, the path to happiness:
  1. Sell the PAP2T and upgrade to one of the SPA units
  2. Do what the helpdesk have advised, if you still need help send me a PM
  3. Organise a weekend away for you and your fiance so you don't spend the rest of the week sleeping on the couch :)
If you really can't, ring Telecom and ask them to setup a new phone line for you, and ask them to port your VFX number over (this should be possible). Once the line is in (and all open support tickets have been closed) ring WxC and ask them for normal broadband added to your account.

I still think you should give naked DSL + VFX another go.

If you are having issues with VFX voice, it can also be related to a poor DSL connection. This is something that should also be checked. Can you post some DSL line stats? I.E. up/dn speeds, noise margins, line attenuation etc. Also, what is the phone wiring like in the house? With N-DSL, you should really only have one dedicated line into a single dedicated jack-point.
I think Nate was going to email you my details, but you are welcome to PM me if you need some more help.

@nate - thanks for the info and help - much appreciated.

I've gone ahead and ordered the SPA as suggested, should turn up early next week. I also updated the firmward on my Netgear router and so far, fingers crossed, it all seems to be working a lot better.
cheers.

@coffebaron - yes Nate did forwrad your details, cheers. Have been flat out so apologies for the slack response time. As above, it seems to be working ok - so far. As for the house wiring, it looks like there are 3 or 4 jacks around the house. We're only using the one in the office with the modem/router plugged into it.
Whats the easiest way to check the DSL line stats? I noticed some connection info under one of the router settings pages but canny remember exactly what it was except for UL/DL speeds. I'll check over the w/e and post.

couple other questions;
Have ordered the SPA 2102, but couple questions;
-Call quality - will it be any better with the SPA, what is the diff to the PAP2T?
-QOS - do i need to worry about this, is it still advisable to use my Netgear router and the SPA, or should i really invest in a router that will do QOS and act as a SPA? Dont really want to this though if poss.

Do post back your exact router model. Line stats should be in one of the router pages, probably those UL/DL speeds you found.
Additional jack-points can add issues, even if not in use. Ideally, you want to find the first jack-point that the line comes into, then kill the feed to the other jack points. Or, run a new cable from Telecom demarc to router.
The ideal setup is:
ADSL router >>> SPA2102 >>> PC / network.
The ADSL router would be configured with no firewall / QoS settings; the SPA2102 would handle the VFX QoS

The router is a Netgear DG834PN. Dont know if its of any importance, but I brought the modem back from the UK with me. Have updated the regional settings to be local NZ tho.

Connection stats from the modem;

Connection stats

Jack points - there are 3 or 4. only the one connected to the modem, but I get your point about not mattering if connected or not, so I'll try getting around
to sorting that out to one of your suggestions.

Cheers guys for the help. Hopefully the new SPA turns up Monday and my problems are solved. VFX is down again after a massive 3 or 4 hours uptime over 3-4 days Cry

Thanks for the stats, this very much looks like a DSL issue. A couple of key indicators here:
1. the up-time of router is approx 61 hours. The up-time of WAN (Internet) is less that 2min
2. D/S line attenuation is quite good at 30.5db, but your sync speed is below 4Mbps when really for those stats should be about 6Mbps +.

A few things to do:
1. check / update firmware for your router.
2. re-cabling as per my advise above
3. there may be a fault on the line, or at the exchange that could also be the issue.

Cheers again for the reply.

1. I updated the router firmware a couple days ago, so thats taken care of.
2. I'll have a go at recabling myself, but wont get around to this til next weekend.
3. If there is a line or exchange fault, how do I go about getting that looked at/checked?

here's an updated Stats screenshot if its of any use. WAN uptime is now over 20 hours with router up over 80 hrs.

With WAN up-time of 20hrs, has VFX dropped out over this time? Monitor this in conjunction with VFX to see if there is a patten; i.e. if VFX goes down, has WAN up-time reset?
To get the line checked, you log a fault with Xnet help-desk, but beware if the fault is found to be internal, there maybe charges.
