This is a question I like to put to you and any others that feel they can advice me.
I live 20K's from a 10'000 people small town. A few months ago I was all keen to join Fusion and go with all, internet and phone, over VoiP.
As much as I can remember the cost advertised was $69.-. I tought this could be the thing to go for. Cancel TC and have one service+ Cellphone for emergency. Would'f had to buy new hardware also.
Further down the track I discovered that by being this distance from the town, which has nothing to do with the existing phone exchange it was going to cost $20,- more! I found this to be a smack in the face.
I would be keen to hear why the cost is $20 more as the exchange is only 4K's away!
I am looking forward to get a comment.

Thanks
Noig

Is this because you are classed as being rural as opposed to urban? Xnet had no say in where the boundry between the two areas were to be set nor the price they pay to access the copper lines. I think this was set by the commerce commission wasn't it?

Yes exactly and I think it is an unfair situation.I am sure some urban places are further away from the exchange and still classed as urban and not rural.
I'm not sure who set those boundaries nor the reason to set any boundaries other than the distance from any exchange or other device that is relevant?

Hi Niog,

This became a regulated service and the pricing was set by the Telco Commisioner after receiving recommendations from all concerned parties, we would have loved for it to be the same price, but we have no say now I'm sorry, he set the price for the whole industry and that is now the regulated price.

The problem then became when they couldn't tell us what area is rural and what area was urban which we found pretty starnge considering they wanted a 2 tier price for rural and urban and could tell us what was what, so there was a delay in telling every one and so there was a lot of confusion for everyone including us.

Hope this answers your question and understand your confusion around it.

Is the boundary now defined so people can know before signing up?

Maverick
Thanks for your explanation.
By the looks of it it just supports my understanding that on way or another they have to generate xtra revenue.
Interestingly the town people don't pay more for power than the people leaving right next to the generation of it.
And without people living in rural situations there is no support for the towns either.
So to me the theory that a "rural" place should pay more for the phone(or internet) is just poor short thinking!!!
I'm not blaming you, it is just short comings of our common system. The outlook is (sadly) not better.
