Hello all!

I have done a bit of searching, but have kind of run into a brick wall over this one.

I am looking to move to Australia in about four weeks time, and want to take my NZ number with to keep in touch with family. Initally I will be staying in backpackers, who have wireless internet available for use. What I am wanting to do is work out a way to port my number to VFX, and have a phone connection that I can connect to the wireless network to use while I am in Australia, until we get our own place.

I have seen people recommending getting a VoIP desk phone and a wireless adapter, however I haven't been able to find where I can get the adapters from (though someone posted a picture of one), and also need to know what I will need in the way of power requirements. (ie will I need 2 power points or one?)

I will also have my laptop over there (Mac), if that can be factored into the equation...

I am looking for the most cost effective solution available, as budgets will be tight to start out.

Any help will be appreciated!

Thanks

If you have a Linksys device (such as a phone or ATA) you can use a Linksys WBP54 Wireless bridge to connect the device to a WiFi network. You need to configure the SSID and key in the WBP54G and it can then connect to the network.

You may need to check that the setup cd works with your mac, from memory you need a windows pc to startup the cd and setup the wifi access on the dongle..

Just a heads up before you buy..

The few (non Linksys) WiFi bridges I have owned, have the setup CD for those who wish to take the easiest route, but can still just be logged into from any browser to do even the first config.

MMV between brands.

Belkin bridge that I had last was SUPER reliable and hassle free.

Or use the laptop and connect it to the ata with a crossover cable and turn on the mac equivalant of internet connection sharing.

Or use 2talk who will allow a softphone and forget the ata or hardphone and take a headset.
