A friend has recently been 'converted' from copper to a wireless home phone set up … all working OK.

However, some outgoing calls take a long time to connect/start ringing, and Vodafone's web site says that the delay can be shortened by adding * to the number dialled.

So, why the delays, and what does the * do?

Call setup time can't be speed up by putting anything in front of a number dialed

You have misinterpreted what you have read on the VodafoneNZ site please provide a link to the information you have read

When calling a mobile number and it takes longer to start ringing this is working as designed as sometimes the mobile network has to look for the device to start paging it

I don't know any other way to explain it

I have zero idea what the * would do before setting up the call

Must be related to the wireless home phone it's self not the mobile network

If anything, a # and the end of the number might help when dialing of-hook. # is generally the 'send' key when it comes to VoIP.

But really, it just shows a poorly configured dial plan.

ohh.... are these VoIP? Or just cellular?

It may be a timeout to do with 9 and 10 digit numbers?

Does it dial out straight away if the number is 10 digits e.g 027 xxx xxxx?

It may sit and wait for the 10th digit just in case e.g VF can be 9 or 10 digits, landlines 9, the * could pad 9 digit numbers out to 10.

Waits for the end user to press call before sending all the digits same as when you do a normal mobile call

So I'm trying to find out where that website info came from, as I've tested this morning and hitting * appears to do nothing useful. Will update once I know more.

Question:

If the home phone service is essentially 4G mobile, does that mean that the handsets can also send/receive TXTs?

I suspect it depends which handset, see http://help.vodafone.co.nz/app/answers/detail/a_id/22374/
I tried the MobiWire one this morning and it looks like it'll do SMS. What handset does your friend have? Maybe one of them does need * to be pressed. Regardless, that info needs to be clearer.

Home phone wireless is not 4G and only works over 3G circuit switch you don't need 4G to send and receive SMS and GN number ranges are not in the SMSR routing tables
