Can I please have a brief idea of how the old/original Vodafone-TelstraClear T-box thingie worked?
Specifically, was it connected to an antenna, or internet via wifi/ethernet cable, or dedicated proprietary/external cable?
Tks.

Hi, it operated over the Telstra/Voda HFC network, so required an RG6 coax from the network, it also required an seperate HFC modem that was connected via Ethernet to provide EPG traffic.

Thanks for those replies … I have a friend who called to say their old T-box has now gone and want some sort of replacement or TV access, but could not identify what connections were available, viz. wall sockets or bits of cable left over, don't even know if there is a roof antenna 😁
Will visit on weekend and take a look, but was rather hopeful that there was an ethernet cable or port nearby.

content is moving to internet. Although Freeview will remain for a while, even that is being broadcast via internet too.
right or wrong, that’s where things are moving too.
I hope your friend has good internet, good wiring and good personal equipment for their house

The T-box's can be made to run over IP instead of coax. Mine is thanks to some above and beyond assistance from @zollymonsta

Vodafone told me the the T-Box wasn't supported anymore and when our one dies that is the end of it.
Can it be configured to run without going through the extra modem?

They are kind of unsupported now I gather, but when we moved from a house with HFC to a house with UFB we managed to get our T-Box up and running on IP over UFB. Vodafone had told us this was possible and would happen, but when it came to actually implementing it it turned into a giant SNAFU.

Yes, can run over UFB with a Vodafone Residential broadband connection.
You likely be pushed towards the new Vodafone TV as the T-Box is end of life and will be disabled at some point in the future.

Hi all,
We still have our old T-box which we don't want to give up as the Voda TV recording options don't suit our needs. We need to be able to keep several of the te recording for long periods which you can't do the the new Voda TV box.
I have noticed recently that some of our programs recorded on the T-box have disappeared. Does anybody know if the are applying the same policy as to the time you can keep them on the T-box as well as the voda TV box?
Cheers Paul
The old ones run over UDP , the new vodafone tv units run via the streaming kaltura service
2 different platforms

Hi, not sure if UDP or not, but I think the salient detail is it uses multicast where as the Kaltura service as used by VodaNZ is Unicast.

The old T-Box, once the bugs got worked out, was brilliant, the new VTV box is a pale shadow. I have been unable to convince Voda to connect it to fibre as all they want to do is sell me a VTV box not recognising it doesn't do the same things.
Speaking of memory lane...well, well, well. Funny how they were against the fibre rollout back then, too...and look where it is now (growing) compared to the number of cable users (static and/or declining).
Flash back to data caps.. UGH.
