After last night's storm in Wellington, I came out this morning to find that the ducting holding my neighbors vodafone cable (it goes to an old 'saturn' box on the side of their house) has ripped off the pole it should be attached to and is now hanging pulling on my fibre cable (which I'm sure can't be great for it as it's continually swinging).

 



Is there a method for contacting vodafone to ask for somebody to fix it if you aren't a customer?   I've been looking at the vodafone website but all contact methods seem to start with asking for account details.   And I can't ask the neighbors as to contact vodafone as they just moved out so there isn't anybody in the house the cable goes to to talk to.

 

I'm wondering if I might be best to just try to do a basic fix myself for now?  The ducting was held up by saddle brackets that look to have rusted away.   So I could at-least reattach the cable to the pole to the point that it's not tugging on the fibre continually..

Contact yr provider, I’m sure Chorus would want it fixed to prevent more damage to their network.

If it's a Vodafone cable then contacting Chorus probably won't accomplish much, although they may be able to contact Vodafone on your behalf.

 

Edit: Didn't see the bit about it tugging on the Chorus fibre.

Yes its vodafones conduit thats broken but its putting pressure on the chorus fibre. can potentially cause damage to their infrastructure. while they may not be able to fix the issue the can save the fibre

Chorus won't touch the Vodafone cable at all, so you may need to call Vodafone (lol) and hope like hell that you get someone who knows what you're talking about without transferring you, and can action a damages case.

 

Caveat: good luck with that.

Thanks for all the advice. I ended up reattaching the bottom half of the conduit to the pole for now so that it's no longer tugging on the fibre. I'm hoping perhaps on Monday somebody from Vodafone might be on the forums and give me an option to get a request put in for a fix without having to fight the support system.

I had a neighbour's low hanging Voda cable that would have been snagged by a bin truck. The current neighbours weren't Vodafone customers and their system seemed to need faults attached to a current account number. The csr just found the nearest live account and used the pole number as the fault location.

I'm surprised that's a telco cable, the red electrical tape looks a bit daggy.

Thank you for fixing up the cable so that it wasn't jeopardising the Chorus cable.

While a nearby live account/pole ID would be helpful, it's not necessary for this scenario.

For the record, between my last update to the thread and your message. I happened to run into the owners of the house the cable runs to. They said they might try calling vodafone as well, so depending if they do so the fix might also get requested via them.
