Hi Folks,

I'm helping a friend segment his network (he has a lot of IoT/home automation devices). He has a One NZ Ultrahub with a One NZ 'landline' hanging off the side. Does anyone know if this router is capable of running multiple VLAN interfaces on the LAN side with basic firewalling? Otherwise, he'll need to add another router downstream for inter-vlan routing/firewalling. If it weren't for the VoIP service, we would of course just replace the thing. Thoughts?

Ultrahub has no such capability.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Change to voice on the ont and use your own proper router.

Plenty of other providers that do if one do not. IME best way to get any of the ISP managed gear off your network and not have the hassles of double natting.

You're correct - I'm afraid we don't support ATA voice services.

@mcraenz - you'll either need to add another router downstream like you've mentioned or move the voice service (with or without broadband) to a provider that doesn't require their RGW for voice services.

Seams to just be Voyager and ONE left…. all other major providers now use the ONT ATA

Also do they need a landline? could they do away with it and then you don't need to change ISP

Yes, there is someone in the house who insists! There are of course many ways to deliver the PSTN service and getting rid of the ISP router would be optimal. But yea I'll present the options and see how much apatite there is for change.

I'm not sure what the best options are for routers/firewalls these days. Maybe something Ubiquiti? I've virtualised everything now so not familiar with what's popular in the hardware space. It needs to be easy to manage - my friend has a tech background but has done very little with networking.

I have experience putting Ultrahubs behind SonicWALLs for commercial clients (creating a LAN Interface on VLAN 10 and providing a DHCP server) need to get SIP Timeouts and everything correct in the firewall policies.

Of course this is a non-supported configuration by ONE NZ who will tell you to plug the Ultrahub back into the ONT (however we provide the customer with Support)
