last friday when I had my phone on my hip I must of forgotton to lock it and leaned against something at work and it dialled out to the last number I had called.
12 minutes later at 3.42pm I got a txt from voda saying I had free calls all weekend
When I checked at home my balance had dropped by $17 that day ..
I have just contacted the number it called today (which was an office that I had talked to earlier that day to ask them if they had stayed on the phone for 12 minutes when they got the call,
And they said definatly no and they don't hang around talking to phones for 12 minutes when no one is there..

Ok, is this possible that they have hung up on their end and on my end and the call wasn't dropped from my mobile still incurring charges. The number called was a telecom landline.

I seriously doubt it. It probably went to a voicemail box, or perhaps you made multiple calls (Which your call log may not necessarily how if it was to the same number)

Hmmm a 12 minute voicemail box ?
and my phone logs all calls even calls to the same number. I tested that out..

It might be a silence detection thing, so if the phone was in your pocket it would be making constant noise (As you move around), but not necessarily in your test. It probably took 12 minutes before there was a long enough period of silence for their voicemail system to think you were done leaving your message.

could be,
when i just called the voicemail box it said "when you are done leaving your message, please push hash"
then when I didn't say anything it kept saying "I cannot hear you, then hung me up after 20secs "

yeah, it was the voice detection on their message bank I think as was suggested above.
I'm very careful to lock it all the time now !

What kind of phone is it? It may have an autolock feature you can turn on which might help
