Can someone please help me understand the differences of 3G.

The Vodafone 3G which I am used to is UMTS 2100mHz?
Telecoms XT is UMTS 850mHz?
Vodafone's new 3G (Extended) is WCDMA 900mHz?

Is this correct?

What's the difference between UMTS & WCDMA?

To get high-speed data i the city I need UMTS 2100mHz, but to get it in the rural centres (that have been upgraded) I need WCDMA 900mHz?

Very confused!

There are technical differences between what WCDMA and UMTS are, and it is described in other forums on Geekzone, but so far as which handsets support which bands the terms are interchangeable with each other.  That is, a phone that runs on UMTS850 is the same as one that runs WCDMA850.  Your summaries are also correct about who runs which frequencies where, except Telecom also have some 2100 coverage in main centres as well.

PS,  if anyone wants to explain the difference between the WCDMA and UMTS you can, but I don't really think it to be necessary...

Correct. For all effects here WCDMA = UMTS.

Correct. If you already have a 3G handset it's most likely 2100 MHz. Some newer models support 900MHz/2100MHz. In the future more models should be available.

What data devices do vodafone offer that can use 3g extended? Preferably we are looking for pcmcia devices - should we get vodafone branded or generic devices?

Currently only their USB Vodem Stick is 3G extended capable.

I have been looking on the net for a WCDMA 900mHz PCMCIA device and have not found any yet.  Was just about to buy a laptop with built-in 3G, but as it doesn't support 900mHz I won't bother.

Aren't these all phones rather than data devices? I'm surprised that nothing supporting 3g extended is available bar the vodem? This is a real weakness as the vodems are huge and I don't think they would go down too well with our users.

If I'm not mistaken those are all phones, I'm pretty sure that he was looking for mobile internet devices, as I was.

What a oxymoron.. "Vodafone Customer Service"... Huh. Now I got that off my chest.
I have finally got a handle on 3G Extended (Rural) and 3G (Main centres).

What I am now looking for is a 3G Wireless Router that will accept a Vodem Stick and will run off 12v DC.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Regards Warren

Thats what I want as well. But as far as I can find the wireless routers only support PCMCIA but none of those cards support 900 mHz.
