Does Vodafone NZ lock their handsets/SIMs?

I have an aging mobile that currently accepts both a NZ and an Australian Vodafone SIM cards, but find that if I buy a new handset in Australia it will be locked even for use in NZ unless I pay lots more money!

Vodafone New Zealand does not lock handsets. Vodafone Australia is another thing...

M,

Thanks for that ... what should be a great example of conectivity (one phone, one SIM, choice of many providers), is somewhat hindered by these telcos .

It's almost now neccessary (and cheaper for local/national calling), to buy a new phone and SIM for each country one travels to!

Australian phones have always been locked with the exception of Vodafone however recently, they have begun locking their handsets too (probably more subsidized or were simply the odd-one-out)

There are plenty of places to get them "unlocked" but buyer beware, you are much better buying a local phone or "Vanilla" phone with no operator customizations if you are a globe trotter.
