hey

I have noticed a substantial increase in usage over the last few days and in fact the usage has gone well over my cap, yet my usage pattern has not changed in months.

Has anyone else noticed a huge increase as i suspect this may be a fault with TC's metering gear?

I encountered an issue a few months ago where Inoticed excessive traffic on my usage meter that wasn't me. Appears there was excessive inbound traffic being blocked by my router/firewall.

My solution was to get my IP address changed which fixed the issue instantly.

Another possibility is Skype, if you have that installed. Friends experienced a big jump in usage - discovered it was because they had become a Skype supernode. Once they configured to prevent that, excess usage stopped (search for details on required config).

Briefly following up - if PC is behind a NAT device (eg router), it will not function as a Skype supernode. If yours is, Skype will presumably not be the cause.

I have had issues with huge usage in the past, but it was a case of choosing a weak password for my wireless network. Sadly I was left with a bill for 210Gigs of bandwidth. Changing the password and encryption method solved the problem.

Are you using any software or hardware to measure your internet traffic usage? I have a Linksys WRT54GL router which is running DD-WRT firmware and this keeps track of all internet usage and displays daily/monthly usage charts. They are almost always very similar to Telstra's online usage meters.
