New computer and thought I'd keep my old one and connect both to a router. As I've never installed or used a router I thought I'd purchase a cheap one for a start to see how thing go. I ended up with the Asus RX3041 the manual is okay and easy to follow and I thought this will be a breeze until it came to access the web-based utility on 192.168.1.1 and found I couldn't connect.

I thought the reason I couldn’t connect to 192.168.1.1 might be caused by the router so I uninstalled the router and using the normal cable modem tried again. Pinging 192.168.1.1 gets time out, tried with the firewall disconnected still can't ping 192.168.1.1 tried in safe mode with the same result (time out).

Until I can access 192.168.1.1 I'm unable to setup the router - can someone help me with this problem please?

Did you change your Windows Network settings between swapping between the router and cable modem? The simplest way is to enable DHCP on your PC before you connect your router.

You need to record the IP address, gateway and DNS settings that are in your PC as you need these to enter into the router to configure it.

The settings are still the same.

Not sure I understand your question - My ip address is static not dynamic.

You need to record the IP address, gateway and DNS settings that are in your PC as you need these to enter into the router to configure it.

If only I could access the router to configure itSmile

Plug in new router - wait a minute or two to let it start up etc - open command prompt - "ping 192.168.1.1" - if no response Id suspect one of two things : 1) The router isnt issuing DHCP 2) Your PC has a fixed LAN address.

If 1, then do a factory reset on it (RTFM).
If 2, then remove the fixed IP from your PC LAN settings (take note of them however in case you need to put them back)

You will be able to access the router once you enable DHCP. Your computer is set with a static IP to connect to the cable modem, this needs to be changed before you can connect to the router.
