The last couple/three days I've been getting excrutiatingly slow load times on web pages both local and international. I've tried it on my home network on a handheld, laptop and desktop, same thing. Yet a speed test shows a decent download/upload time.

I mean, it's slow enough I can go get a coffee and come back. That's just not normal for my house!

Checked my router, did a reboot but the fact that the speed tests are coming back ok point to that not being the issue. Also different browsers, different machines.

Anyone else getting this or just me?

Hi there, does the speed change when you try accessing different websites? like have you tried to access the major ones?

Also does a ping give you similar results?

Hi, yeah, I have boring browsing habits so I always access the same sites ie. stuff.co.nz, trademe, lol cats, some indexing sites and so on, so I really notice when things are not right. Good suggestion on the ping. I'll try that.

I'm also going to check work (different isp) on my handheld though I've been uploading to our work web site from work a lot and haven't noticed anything over there.

I may try downloading something via the browser too. Yesterday it was horrible trying to download a 12 meg file via browser but I didn't think much of it since they're open source sites and typically pretty slow but added to the slow load times now I'm thinking maybe something is up. Then I thought maybe it was the new firefox but it does the same thing in explorer and safari on the hand held.

Maybe my account has been accidently slowed? I'm on the pay per meg plan with no limits in speed but I suppose it's possible. That's what it feels like, as if it's been rate limited to like 64 k or something but then the speed test should have picked that up.

I dunno, scratching my head! I'll give it some more thought after I mow the lawn.

Most welcome. Which OS are you running the main machine on? Have you looked at the TCP/IP settings etc?

I'm getting packet losses and ping timeouts on my ping tests to stuff.co.nz and www.scoop.co.nz
The main machine (my laptop) is running xp and none of the tcp/ip settings, networks or anything else have been changed. Plus it isn't just this machine, it's my whole home network.

I checked my firewall settings on the router; nothing different there either.
I'm not running any software firewall and my AV is the same one I've been using for months.
Nothing weird is running on the network either but just to be sure I'll shut down the other P.C

I did a soft and hard reboot of the router, too.

It's more than one machine, hmmm.
May plug the router directly into the wall and see if things improve. I did once have a splitter go bad on me that gave me these symptoms. Could be again I guess.

The ping timeouts are interspersed with the normal trip time of 57ms. Packet loss for me is very atypical.

Ooops, forgot I don't use a splitter anymore; router runs from phone jack to router, pap2t takes the phone...and I'm getting up to 75% packet loss.

WOW, thats a LOT of packet loss! Ok, how many phone appliances are plugged into the phone line that the ADSL uses... (Phones/Faxes/AnswerPhones etc)

Are they covered by ADSL filters? is the packet loss all the time or just certain times? are you connected to the router via Wireless (G/N) or Wired? Does connecting via the ethernet cable make a differnce?

How old is the Modem? When you turn it off can you smell anything from the box? *(Go in close for this one)*

Have you had "telecom" check the line for Noise? There is an automated system for checking this.
Check for Line Attenuation or the Signal to Noise Ratio

Only one phone, that runs into the pap2t. Same phone we've had for a while.
No, no filters. Router plugs directly into the single phone line in the wall, pap2t plugs into that, phone plugs into pap2t.

No other devices such as phones or fax. No new appliances in the home.
Yes, wireless and I haven't tried it plugged into the router directly yet.

Router is a rta 1025w running latest firmware and it's fairly new ( a year old maybe?), having replaced my old netgear.
Xnet says there is no indication of line noise or any other issues on their end.

I tried a new set of DNS's rather than Xnet's default, no help.
I tried a backup config file I keep onhand for the router and that didn't help.
Checked and made sure windows firewall is off.
Don't recall any microsoft updates in the last two days.

Checked ping from desktop same results. Shut it off, still same results from laptop.

I'm at a loss.
Xnet guy suggested taking the router off site and trying it say at work.
I don't know that I can find my work place ISP settings that easily on a Sunday though.

Can you explain which link to hit for telecom line noise? I asked the xnet guy and he said he didn't see any from his end. Noise and line attenuation are fine from my router's info...I'm pretty close to our exchange...

Sooo, maybe my local exchange is hinky?

I'm just about to plug our other laptop in via ethernet and see what happens with pings. Any suggestion who a good ping would be to?

Ok, tried the second laptop on ethernet, same problems. Only other thing it could be now is local exchange or my router. I'm betting exchange.

I may mosey on over to work and check pings from there; they're on the same exchange as me.

Work station at work won't let me ping and I didn't have my laptop with
me.

Here it is 5 am and I'm messing with this. xnet speed test has me at 6554 kbps, nice and fast.
Pings are still getting packet losses. Web pages still slow.

Pinging another machine on my home network results in no losses.
Doesn't this suggest it's not my router but the actual connection?
No noise to speak of on the line.

As an update, xnet lodged a fault query with Telecom and I got a note saying xnet had heard back and hopefully by now it was fixed. It isn't, but it's still the same day. I did get an email about a tool you guys would like though. It basically records pings so you can see where the data loss is. the tool is called winmtr and you can get it from sourceforge.

Here are some results from a typical run for me with this problem! The percentage is percent lost!

Eastern B.O.P, near Whakatane.
I'm going to try to (again) get up at some ridiculous hour to run the tracert program to prove that even at uncongested times the packet loss is the same or worse. This morning I got up and did some pings at five am with the same lousy results.

Thank you! Thought I was goin nuts. Im in Opotiki and have EXACTLY the same issues which started Friday night. Have re-checked all devices, settings and cables in my house connected to my router and all signs point to not me. Talked to xnet "helpdesk" and he tried to pin on my router aswell but it reeks of a dodgey exchange smewhere in our locale. Funny thing is that my its only my browser speed affected as I get decent speeds on torrents. I get massive packet loss when i ping trademe and when doing a trace route to Facebook it doesnt even finish completely. The only difference it seems is that Im running OSX aswell as Vista (2 seperate machines). Let me know the outcome please!!

I'm in Opotiki too. It ISN'T you. Lol. Same on the massive packet loss to trademe. I'm running XP. It's an exchange issue. That stupid exchange has even gone down for days (two or three times previously) and it takes me forever to convince them it IS down when it happens.

This will be worse because it's still actually running, just direly badly. :P

btw, keep complaining- you must be the other person who the guy I talked to said he spoke to...it's partly you calling that resulted in the fault report to telecom. The note said call back if results didn't improve so we should both call back! Then they'll be able to harass Telecom some more.
