I'm not sure if this has been covered off in the Apple IOS forum or not.

I recently purchased an iphone 4 and debated purchasing outright or going with VF on account.

This is how I looked at it:

Purchase iphone 4 outright, $1099.

Purchase iphone 4 via VF iphone $40 plan, $619 plus contract  ($40 X 24) total spend $1579 over two years.

OK so on the face of it you would wonder why you would tie yourself in to a two year contract but when you look a bit closer you realise it isn't that bad a deal after all.

The total spend of $1579 is $480 more than buying outright but what are you getting for that extra money?

Well it works out at an extra $20 per month over 24 months but for that $20 you are getting 30 anytime minutes, 300 txts and 250mb (currently 3gb) every month.

Service/coverage issues aside (which haven't been an issue for me) for those that have purchased outright what can you get for $20 a month elsewhere??

Quite right. Not sure if you have had a look at the spreadsheet I threw together in http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=76&topicid=65204, but the iPhone 40 plan works out pretty well in terms of value for money.

If you would otherwise need to spend more than $23 on prepay to get what you need, you are better off on the iPhone 40 plan (assuming it's call/txt/data allowances are sufficient).

Good luck on getting the 3GB....my experience is that you have to ring them every month to get the charges for going over 250MB credited back to you.Yell

I had the free 3gb data on my old plan for over a year, no problems at all.

I haven't been on the forums all day...but I'm very sad to see John going, he has helped me out a lot over the very short time I've been on here. I know Steveon won't agree with me (that was well played...not), but farewell and good luck John, I'll miss having you around here.

The reason for staying on the plan really depends on how much data you get. The current 3gb data allowance makes it an easy decision however if you do not account for the 3gb promotion and just calculate it based on 250mb allowance, realistically you can get by with very cheap local/international calling (and txt) using VOIP from another provider with a larger data cap.

Thanks for this advice but someone up there must be annoyed with me. I tried to become a member of the vodafone forums yesterday but the validation emails are not being sent. Before you say 'look at your spam folder' I have looked and tried to resend the validation email (3 times). I manged to add johnr as a friend and got an email saying that was successful....so my email works correctly, just can't get validated and post to the forums. Are there any other vodafone people here that can double-check if there is a problem with their forums new member validation emails?
