I have a customer in the Christchurch CBD that has just signed up for BizNetGold, apparantly supplied via VDSL2.

They are currently a Telecom ADSL customer, using a Cisco 837H ADSL router. The TelstraClear salesdroid was suitably vague about the requirements of the modem to connect to the VDSL2 service, he just kept telling me"it's a fibre connection". Now while the backhaul network is fibre I'm pretty sure that the actual connection is via copper.

Is there a business grade modem/router that would offer the same level of reliability as the existing Cisco 837?

And how many hoops do I need to jump through to configure a router to connect to the VDSL2 service? Is it just like an ADSL connection only betterer?

The 837 is only ADSL, no VDSL. I don't believe they're backwards compatible, so you'll need a VDSL2 modem. I'm not aware of any consumer level VDSL2 modems, however Cisco does do one. The 887, I believe.

There are lots of "cunsumer level" VDSL2 modems out there, however there are very few in NZ at present due to the small numbers of VDSL2 connections.

I believe TCL still supply VDSL2 modems for their VDSL2 service.

The customer is currently in a fixed term contract with Telecom for phone services, TelstraClear are paying out this contract.

Because they have done this they are not going to be supplying a new modem/router.

The sales person initially told me that all I would need to do would be update the username/password in the existing router.

He did have a flyer advertising NetComm modems, but I'm not convinced that they will be reliable enough. The existing Cisco replaced a number of Dynalink modems that failed and has been well worth the money. Hence my wanting another Cisco product.

VDSL2 products from many of the big name suppliers are still quite limited. Cisco don't do a lot yet and Draytek don't even have a single VDSL2 product yet.

I must admit that, on paper at least, regular cable represents far better value than BizNet. Using BizNet Premium as an example, $199.95 per month gives you up to 15Mbps/4Mbps. You then pay for data usage. Even Telecom's Business Broadband plans seem far better deals.
