I just recently moved to a new house (Cambridge Terrace in Papatoetoe). My 3G connection would be laughable if it weren't so frustrating.

If I get 2 bars out of 5 on my iphone 4, it's a Woo Hoo! moment, but that's only about 10% of the time. Most times, assuming I even have 3G service, I've got 1, and frequently (easily 50 -60% of the time, if not more) I'm on 2g, but I get 3-5 bars on that. Even when I get 3g, the speed is exceedingly slow. A couple of streets over though, I get full bars and fast speed.

In my old house (also in Papatoetoe but a few km away), I was frustrated because I usually only had 3 bars on 3g, with the occasional spike up to 4, and what I assumed was a slower speed because of it, but I'd love to have that back now. I also didn't realize that really, I had good speed there (especially when compared to here).

Is this some kind of dead zone here? I still occasionally get the issue of dropped calls, missed texts, not being able to make calls and having to go to airplane mode to fix it, but I thought that was fixed so I decided to start a new thread.

Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks.

Yes you must be in a 3G indoor Black spot 2G will be stronger as this works on the 900mhz band in this area and 3G is on the 2100mhz Band

What is your house made out of?

What is the coverage like when you walk outside?

Just cause you live in a main Centre does not promise you any level of mobile coverage.

Coverage from any carrier is best effort sometimes its difficult for carriers to deploy new coverage just look in the media

House: brick & tile

Coverage outside: still meh, got up to 2 bars for a bit, mostly still on 1.

I realize there is no promise of level of service, but I thought that since I'm not out in the boonies somewhere, or even on the edge of boonie-ville, that the service would be pretty good. I haven't been anywhere in Auckland that my service has dropped down to 2g, so I find it a real drag. C'est la vie I guess.

Sounds like this area of Papatoetoe is low 3G coverage and if your house is brick coverage will be lower inside

Coverage changes every second or third week we kind of know approx what is coming in 3 months and where.

You're living in pretty much the same area as me (I'm on Wilmay Avenue, Papatoetoe) with an iPhone 4 and I find the indoor reception terrible (1-bar most of the time, sometimes 2G).

Outdoor reception is a little better, but not much although speeds are still slow.

As I move towards the Auckland CBD speeds get much much better, even indoors.

I'm going to take a big guess and say you are most likely on contract.......

BUT you could always buy a prepaid XT microsim and try and see what coverage you get then. There network is 100% 3G so at least you can be assured you won't have to worry about dropping back to 2g.

from the vodafone coverage maps it shows a few poor signal areas in Papatoetoe, which is strange...

Why strange the map is reflecting the coverage

Carriers do not mirror image coverage foot prints when building out networks

I know of places XT has Low coverage and Vodafone has good coverage and I know of places XT has good coverage and low on Vodafone.

My place is dire for XT, only sniffs of 850MHz and lousy 2100 only upstairs and by downstairs windows, but great for both vodafone 2g and 3g now, yet my cousins place in northcote has SFA VF 3g, spotty 2g yet great XT.

It would be great if the telcos could all build awesome networks, but those NIMBY people ruin it for everyone.

I think that there should be a directional jammer put on the pole outside anyone that raises an objection to any mobile tower install that isnt a direct eyesore problem to them.

Another idea, bus shelter advert saying "no 3g here thanks to whatstheirname who live at xyz whatever street" and a copy of their objection, since I believe they are all public record ;)

Certainly not the worst 3G coverage in a major centre. I get no 3G coverage at my house and about 2 bars of 2G coverage at best. Not much better until you get a couple of blocks from our house.

Heck even here at work (near the Chch public hospital, 1 minute from the city centre) I get 1 bar of 3G.

Yeah, me too. I'm not that far from CBD in Christchurch (well within 10Km) yet I live inside a zero 3G area. Slightly annoying. Can only hope that in time our black spot gets taken care of.

Doubt many people would object to installations of low-power microcells to cover deadspots (less than 50m coverage radius approx).
