Vodafone's 3g reception hasn't exactly been the greatest this year, but it seems to steadily be getting worse.

-In Hoon Hay I get calls loosing voice, 3g dropping off after a few seconds in a call / using data.

-In the CBD near hagley park where I work I get no 3g reception (I used to only a month or so ago).

-Often when I unlock my iPhone (yes I have a bumper on it!) I get an error saying I'm not connected to a cellular network, then it connects fine.

I would usually blame it on the iPhone but I've had the same experiences with a Samsung i9000 I had for a week and my previous 3gS.

I logged a job with Vodafone faults and at first the guy straight up told me 'Well that's just not true' about the dropping of calls / loss of voice but as I explained it he gave me the usual form to fill out with all the dates, times and fault.

I haven't really held up my end of the deal as I haven't emailed it back to him, I never seem to be in a position to note things down when it's happening, also it does seem that their network is getting generally worse almost no matter where I am. Also to add to this I am moving house in the next few weeks so I won't really care about Hoon Hay anymore.

I was in Shirley last week and I think the 3g network was lightning quick for some reason.

In summary:

-If I disable 3g I find the network more reliable / stable.
-I don't want to live with 3g disabled as I use my smartphone a lot.

Any pointers, tips or suggestions short of moving to Telecom?

Hi Sammcj

Can you please PM me your mobile number so I can get this issue looked into

Can you also please include the fault ticket numbers you have.

Sounds like we might have to get a drive test team into the area for further investigation

Thanks John

Just a update the Guy was Max (Who I know)

He needed examples so he could do traces and check the serving cell stats your handset attaches to in the area. A handset could attach to many cells in the same location not even moving. Examples were not proivded and no phone call back to Max.

Max provided a 0800 number that goes direct to him.

Vodafone followed process with good note taking in the ticket.

Just my 2 cents worth

Thanks John

I fully agree with John,

As mentioned in my original post, I have not kept to my end of the deal by providing Max with a spreadsheet of the dropped / flaky calls.

As this is happening at both the CBD and in the Hoon Hay area is there any chance it could be something like a dodgy SIM card etc...?

Although the call log would help with the call quality issues I'm not sure it would with the disappearance of usable 3G reception in the CBD area where I work?

After digging through some call logs, I have supplied Max with 3 calls that have lost voice in the area.

I made a call last night about 10ish and the reception was good no voice errors at all.

Christchurch suffers from tree fading, the Radio coverage is vastly different in winter to that in Summer when all the trees are in leaf. Tree leafs and especially pine trees act as a very good attenuators, and as the spring turns into summer the coverage plot is greatly affected. This is quiet noticeable driving through hagley park where you are completely surrounded by trees.

I'd image that this does occur, and not just in Chch but probably all over the plains of Canterbury (being the flattest of flat things they are)..... and it'd be more noticeable on (from) the 2100 3g sites.

Comments from John R???

I have similar issues with 3G reception around Hagley Park as well. A really noticeable drop compared with a month or two ago.

bahaha, very good.

My office isn't /that/ close to the park.
It's kind of near CD Breweries.

The problem with 3G reception in the Hagley Park/Hospital area of the CBD is the VF Hagley Park cellsite (Tuam St/Riccarton Ave side of the park) is 2G only as far as I can tell. For some reason it has never been upgraded to 3G. There is also another 2G only site on Rolleston Ave close to the YMCA building.
