Flatmates seem keen about ditching Telecom all together, Saturn want close to $350 for a full install (phone + cable net + tv) which I guess we can swallow, do the contractors have to install the cable modem to the PC? or would they install the modem to a router if I asked them to (even if I program the thing myself).
Also with the install, are they likely to discount due to the fact there is a cable box on the side of this house already?

when my cable was installed the guy installed the modem for me physically and then jotted down the IP, gateway and DNS servers for me so that i could configure my router myself.

If you take out a contract there are no installation fees. There are no discounts if the house has been prewired and IMHO the rates are a con - if the house already has the coax hooked up at pole and house for either CATV or a cable modem then adding a modem or catv is a 2 min job but at the end of the day it's working out an average cost. Some installations can cost up to $1000+ if trenching is required, others are only a 30 min job.

my advice is take 12months term, or even 24months term if you and your flatmate will stay there that long.

Most technician and contracted installer will not work on your router, but will enable and configure on your windows. however like blahbmc said, get them to jot down the ip address/gateway/subnetmask/dns.

then you can configure your router easily (if you know how to use your router). Most router has wizard-like to easy configure the setting.
