Does anyone know if vodafone's cellular network is ment to continue to operate during a power outage? Or for what length of time the cell towers are ment to continue operating.

Was just thinking that during Napier's power outages on Monday, there was no coverage throughout the city yet Telecom was working fine. This was within seconds of the power going out. Telecom continued right through.

Has vodafone said if they care about this sort of stuff?

I remember telecom advertising the resiliency of its network a few years ago with some sort of fancy advertisment that showed how they have backup generators in all the exchanges and would think that continues into their cellular network as it did last monday.

Depending on the size of the cell if big enough to fit batteries they get fitted and how long they last is dependent on how much the cell is used.

Many cells have gen plugs on the side but its not possible to leave generators sitting at cells all the time. If a major power outage generally a genset will be sent to a major cell if batteries start to run low

On Sep 4 in Chch the Vodafone network worked pretty damn well considering there was no power for most of the city. I remember johnr and co keeping us updated on here with movements of generators and the capacity of batteries in the cell towers. It was quite a while before power was fully restored (days) yet there was only isolated outages thanks to Vodafone's efforts. I'd take that as a good sign that they care about power :-P
