Over the past couple of months I've noticed a big slow-down on my service in Ngaio, Wellington. I had assumed it was greater pressure in the evenings, as I am at work during the day and away most weekends. But this Sarurday morning, at 7.30 am, when most youthful Internet-hoggers will still be comatose, I was getting a magnificent 600mbps. Hopeless for watching video.

I was discussing the problem last night with another TelstraClear user in neighboring Khandallah, and he's experienced the same fall-off in performance.

Are other people experiencing similar problems?

Are you sure that you are in the correct forum for your question here?

You also might want to spell out whether you are on cable or DSL (if you are indeed with TCL in Ngaio), as I'm aware from some friends there that not all users in Ngaio can be connected to cable.

I hope I'm in the right forum. It says TelstraClear at the top.

I am on TeltraClear cable in Ngaio and the person I mentioned in Khandallah is also on TelstraClear cable..

I am on cable in Karori and noticed a drop-off about 2 weeks after they increased the monthly download cap. My upload is now only just capable of skyping without losing the video stream.

I haven't tried Skype since the fall-off in TCL performance but Using YouTube has become pretty hopeless. The few times I've checked, my upload speed has been OK. A couple of times lately it's been as fast as my download speed. Which isn't saying much...

Things seem fine here in Auckland. On a ADSL service.

I use SmokePing and have it running most of the time. I don't see any major increase in latency to any sites I monitor. For example, look at the 400 days at the bottom of this page

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

[ Since this is now in the correct forum I feel a bit better to leave my comment ... ]

I'm on TCL cable over in Maupuia and I can't confirm any recent slowdowns. In fairness I have to say that I had poor streaming (e.g. from YouTube) for most of 2010. Only in the later month (like October onwards) did that improve. I can't say that I've noticed more problems in the evenings either.

Ahem, forgot to ask: What DNS servers have you configured in your router?

I believe a consensus is that the "ClearNet" ones (i.e. 203.97.78.43 and 203.97.78.44) are working better than the "ParadiseNet" ones (i.e. 203.96.152.4 and 203.96.152.12). A possibly bad streaming result might come from using "public" DNS server (like the one from Google: 8.8.8.8) as that prevents the TCL caching servers to serve you popular data.

I don't know what DNS settings are in my router, but they've never been changed (manually anyway) since default when the router was installed several years ago. I've never investigated such settings but it looks as though I should learn how! Thanks for the suggestion.

I noticed a slight slow down too and so did my sister (located in Silverstream) but everything seems to be going well today. Not only resolving but also the downloading as well.

Btw, I think you mean 600KBps not 600mbps - I wish we could have 600mbps to the hope but I doubt it'll happen in my lifetime :P
