Hi there. Just wondering how those of you with TelstraClear in Auckland are finding speed and consistency of ADSL2+ service here, specifically where LLU has happened and you are linking to TCL's own equipment at the exchange? A TCL salesman going door-to-door offered me such a connection, with home phone plus max speed broadband plan for $75/month with up to 10GB usage, plus free surfing on 2 internet TV channels.

I'm trying to compare if it really would be that different from my current naked broadband experience with Xnet fusion (including voice). The deal offered is just slightly dearer than what I'd currently spend as a light user, and you have to sign up to TCL for 24 months... so your experiences welcome!

I mostly use the net for regular browsing of local sites. Downloads of occasional albums seem fine but would be interested in quicker, crisper browsing - seems 'average' for home broadband (faster at work).

OOLKA speed tests last night showed Xnet (apparently with wild inconsistency!) giving me:
tests from 6pm - 11.15pm: 1.5 to 2.8Mbps down (I forget the up)
tests from 7.15am - 8.30am: 7.6 to 7.8Mbps down, 0.80 up
Might have to do more tests tonight.

Hardware (can give more detail later from home):
- Belkin ADSL2+ router, connected at central ADSL filter/splitter
- attenuation 33
- noise (down) was 15db

I also wondered if that attenuation figure would reduce the benefits of a bigger/better ISP? Anything else I should consider?

Cheers

From the looks of those speedtests, are you sure you are on ADSL2+?

what exchange are you connected to? i'm with callplus and the mt eden exchange has been very slow lately for local, national and international traffic in peak times - i'm wondering if there is a backhaul contention issue there.

Thanks for the responses so far.

ADSL2+ is in the offering for my current plan, if you're close enough to the exchange, and we should be close enough. I thought the speed I got in the morning (7.75Mbps) was in the ball park for ADSL2+ - or am I way off?

I'm connecting to the Mt Roskill exchange. It's about 1.2km from my address on the most direct road route, so probably less than 2kms as the wires travel. The TCL rep also mentioned they are canvassing the area specifically because we're close enough to benefit from their service.

Checked my hardware details more closely-
Belkin F5dD8636-4 v1

Home screen on the router reports:
                       (Down / up)
Data Rate        13501Kb  / 945Kb
Noise margin    11 / 15
Output power dBm 122 / 181
Attenuation             33 / 12

Just did another OOLK speed test on consumer.org and got 2.13 v 0.77 Mbps. Might call Xnet and see what they think...

Yip you are definately on ADSL2.

Not sure why you only get 7.5Mb/s download during the day.

I get around 6.5-6.8 Mb/s on ADSL1.

Telstraclear does generally have better peak time performance than Xnet imo.

I also believe this is true regardless of whether your connection is provided over LLU gear or Telecom wholesale gear.

Most likely it comes down to scale and customer demographics (high % of low usage users on Telstraclear compared to Xnet).

The flipside is Xnet has much more flexible billing/data cap system than Telstraclear and is cheaper.

If you are considering Telstraclear for better peak time performance I would also take ISP's like Telecom and Maxnet into consideration too.
