We all knew it would happen. Just like that Paul Brislen changed sides and declared:

"Let’s look at that baggage – Vodafone’s coverage in the rural sector has always been less than optimal. The company says it covers 97% of where New Zealanders live work and play – but that’s people, not geography and in rural and remote areas you can leave the township and immediately lose coverage."

Now this is nothing new, and we all knew it. The discussion about "people" and "geography" is a long one. And it's not only on Vodafone, but Telecom as well. With all the economic implications.

As for Paul, he's doing it right. His job at Vodafone was to say what the company wanted out there. So when people complained about rural coverage and he defended the company line, he wasn't doing anything wrong really.

What else would you expect??

Paul has to show he's moved into a new space. And it's not just a poke at VF but at all 97% coverage network operators. He's simply used Vodafone as his foil to help that process.

But is it a not also a supportive comment with regards the RBI alliance???
Planting 154 new cell towers around the country won't just improve Rural BB it'll allow the 97% Telcos to hang their collective hats on a newly described percentile peg too.

You know you breaking the law when powering up one of these?

People have been fined by the RSM

I suggest you look into Sure Signal if you can get ADSL in your location

Build better coverage instead.

Sure signal means ongoing costs with the ADSL connection which may not be desired or wanted.

Does vodafone offer any indoor repeater options for people that do not wish to purchase ADSL off vodafone but want to sort out coverage? The lack of RF connectors on phones nowdays is very disappointing so a repeater is the only option if you want to get them to be usable in an indoor basement or similar.

Yes. I have seen it myself at a large companies premises. Coverage inside the building was very poor, even though the building was located in the heart of the Hutt.

Vodafone (I assume it wasn't Telecom) installed some kind of boosters all throughout the place apparently. This was about 4-5? years ago.

I wouldn't think they would do it for domestic clients though.

He said people, not companies/buildings/etc. ;)

EDIT: Also what are they using for backhaul?

I have also seen a box on the wall with a couple of yagi's in a large metal warehouse, asked the guys and they said it was for cellphones, but when I was there I had nothing on my phone so I could only assume it was for GSM only or telecom since I was VF only at that time.

They may have been for a PBX DECT solution..

Hey guys thanks for all the comments - it really says a lot!!
I do not want Vodafone ADSL as quite happy with my current provider all I need (Vodafone) is decent coverage in my area. So the Sure Signal femtocell is a great product but other options should be permitted for people to get better coverage or let the femtocells be used on other ADSL providers. At the end of the day they (Vodafone) will still benefit because people will use their cellphones! Why is it so hard to understand?
There are many folk in the same situation. So much for a free country! I may get a wilson from an overseas source just in spite!

This is interesting but...

Presumably even TUANZ isn't going to claim that a Telco (or several of them) should go and build a fibre backhaul plus cell tower and all the associated stuff for ONE SINGLE USER on a farm outside current coverage areas.

Assuming (reasonably) that TUANZ would agree that's a stupid and unreasonable expectation, all we have now is a commercial decision based on building infrastructure where the usage justifies it from a combination of financial and social responsibility factors.

So TUANZ, here's the question for you.

What's a reasonable ROI for a Telco installing a new tower and associated costs? 5 years, 20 years, 500 years?

Cheers - N

By using this device you risk breaking the stability of services. That is why airwaves are regulated. You would not go around plugging your own generator to the grid without consent, would you?

As for the femto cell all 3G services are available, including data. Vodafone is zero rating traffic but you would be in for a surprise if you used it with another DSL provider and your neighbour connected his smartphone to your cell. All his mobile data would go through your broadband costing YOU money.

Re: being against the law to use a booster amplifier

Unbelieeevable!

Where is this law?

Do you want the public to use your network or not?  Frankly I'm very tempted to jump ship.
