I'm a Otago Uni student but at the Christchurch campus. After the earthquake, we received a few texts from presumably Otago University (the number is just 4666) informing us of class cancellation etc. This afternoon we received another bunch of texts about the status of the UOC building. After this, a few of us on prepay noticed that their balance had gone down by quite a bit and we were wondering if we were being charged for these notification txts. I'm on a plan and checking my billing it looks like I'm being charged $2.60 per text for this.

So my question is are we supposed to be charged for these txts? I only provided my number as contact details to the Uni, had no idea I'd be signing up for some expensive txt alert program. The other thing is, how can I opt out of this?

Ok after some of us talked to customer service and were told to call 0800 767 565 for the company that signed us up. After some googling I found out that the company was Glomobi, some ringtone/mobile services company. Would Otago uni deal with these people? Or are we getting scammed by these guys?

Thanks John.

I've replied stop. Are we supposed to get a confirmation message? Haven't received one.

No I didn't sign up for txt alerts of any kind. I was required to list a mobile number for the uni as basic contact information though.

What do you mean by confirm my mobile number?

Edit: And is it likely a large number of Otago Medical students in Christchurch all signed up and confirmed for this service?

Have you entered your mobile phone number in any service online, or sent a message to any service? In reply you would have a received a message saying something like "Welcome... to cancel reply with STOP" or something similar.

What is strange is those messages claiming to contain Otago University information. Surely the University wouldn't give your details to a third party for this?

I haven't sent a message to any service (other than stop), and the first message I got from them was two days after the EQ when I was out with the student army, which told me class was off for the week.

Thanks for looking into it John. Really appreciate it.

I work in IT for the University of Otago. I'm not aware of us doing any mass-notification in that form (though I wouldn't necessarily be anyway), but I'll talk to some people tomorrow who may have a better idea of what's going on - I would sincerely hope that's not something we'd do.

I am sure this is not related to the Uni

Cheers johnr - You're probably absolutely right, but all the same, it can't hurt to ask.

All impacted customers will be getting credited back shortly

Sorry about the mixup

Thanks John
