Hi there,

My TCL digital TV decoder makes an irritating noise. I'm wondering other people get this too, or if I have a faulty unit.

It's a bit hard to describe - white noise, a little like hard drive noise varying to a high pitched whine, or something. It's there all the time, and varies a bit I suppose.

It's not loud enough to notice when I have something on (music, TV) but when I don't it's noticeable enough to be annoying.

Anyone (or everyone) have a similar experience?

After just swapping a faulty decoder our new decoder does this also... thats 2 down

Maybe its some sort of wireless community TV station.

Does it sound like an earth hum?

Not like an earth hum I don't think (though I'm no electronics expert). It's a high-pitched noise with brief gaps at irregular intervals.

Out of curiousity I disconnected everything except the power cable, and unplugged the other appliances from the mains. No difference of course!

It is definitely coming from the power supply type area in the decoder, I will be calling TCL about this soon :)

Whistle is caused by the switch mode power supply inside the units.

Telstraclear will replace with another for you when you ring up :)

Been there done that.

I phoned up Telstraclear today about the very same problem,
and they are sending a techo round later on this week. I can't hear myself but my wife and kids noticeit, it is very high pitch and only audible when everything else goes quiet.

Yeah..Ive got this problem too. At first I thought it was the hard-drive in my Tivo.
Guess I will phone faults then.
Dont forget to make sure you get one of the new decoders with the S-Video out!

What's with the S-Video out, ? Will it be a better picture, hope so as we are getting on occasion a "posterise" effect, not sure if that is our plasma tv our the poor quality of the digitised rendering that's sent down the line. Nope, thinking about it it must be the digital signal because DVDs are picture perfect. (Sorry for thinking out loud!)

Thanks everyone for your replies (I'm the OP). Nice to have some ammunition; now the trick is getting through to faults. A 35 minute wait time last time I rang.

Definitely looking forward to the s-video too, thanks Riposte, great tip.
