Have recently changed over to VFX fusion and have not been able to dial overseas in the last 2 months.

I upgraded to a TP-Link TD W8960N router mode and a Linksys PAP2T from PBTech.
This was provisioned or whatever they call it and the phone works fine mostly but can't dial internationally.

Have logged at least 2 tickets with World Exchange but alas still have no international calls.
Calls dial then either a single ring then nothing or just nothing. Have tried UK, USA and Australia numbers

I have been told by my wife that the other end can hear us but can't be heard at our end.

Has anyone else had these problems with WXC VFX and international calls.

If it don't get fixed son the wife is voting for a return to Telecom line

Some TP-Link devices have a SIP ALG that will cause issues with VoIP - it doesn't matter where you are calling.

Try the following http://www.tp-link.com/at/support/showfaq.asp?id=343

The issue is not with WxC its with your local setup,

Here is the information from your PAP2T , the PR =1 tells us this device did not rx any Audio

Here is what we see at our end.

Thanks for all the advice. I shall try that tonight.

My problem is - why did it take this long to tell me what to do - I initially tried the technical dept but they transferred me to customer service.

If they had pursued the problem earlier it might have been a bit more helpful.

Anyway I shall try out all the advice tonight (though did note that the tp-link website says that the advice re- sip ALG only turns off till next reboot of the router).

Anyway my wife will be happy if she can call her friends overseas.

It's probably a little hard for WxC to know every single intricacy of every modem/router on the market.

TP-Link make great modems and their DSL performance is great. I recommend them for anybody who wants rock solid DSL performance but would never use one if their is VoIP gear behind them due to the ALG issue. TP-Link have been promising the ability to disable the ALG in the web GUI but that hasn't eventuated yet.

It would have depended on how you worded the problem.

If you told them you were having problem with international calls they most likely would have assumed it to be a tolls carrier fault and hence put you over to the customer care tolls team (I would have expected them to at least ask if local calling was also affected though).

If however you said you were having an issue with all calls they should have investigated themselves and seen the issue then advise the need to port forward.

All good points but what would an even less tech savvy customer do if they had a tplink router as well.
Another question is, why only international calls when local work fine.

Anyway maybe this could be something mentioned when setting up the vfx "are you using a tplink modem router as there maybe a few extra steps in the setup"
Problem solved before it starts, assuming not problem with other modems as well.

Good news for me and for World Exchange - for me because I managed to turn off the SIP ALG thingo in the router/modem and good news for World exchange as now my wife will not insist on changing back to a decent telephone system that lets her call overseas. Wink

Not too difficult as used my Linux boot up option to telnet to the router and carry out the commands as per the link in a previous post.

Just wondered what would happen to someone the has very little knowledge of computers (I mean I know virtually nothing myself when it comes to VOIP etc).

Might be something that World Exchange could look at with it's setup talk with the person on the phone.

Anyway all fixed (till I reboot the modem and then have to redo the turning off of the SIP ALG)

SIP ALG, I'm trying hard to not break out into a rant but suffice to say I'm not aware of it actually helping ever. Turning it off in the GUI would be nice, but not a big deal most people can be talked through a one off telnet session.  I Agree this isnt WXC's fault your sort of on your own except when the line is completely down etc.. when you buy your own gear.

This is why WXC like to provision everything, they then know the device is going to be setup correctly.  So if you had purchased say the Cisco SRP527they certify on their website, then this issue wouldn't have occurred.

Theres just too many routers out there, and some of them are incredibly stupid for example a certain Thomson router Telecom were selling the only way to change the IP range is to download the backup config file, edit it then upload it again, trying to change via the web gui went nowhere.

I've never encountered an instance where it's actually worked either, and it's very annoying that it's enabled by default on so many devices.

The other device that causes a lot of grief is Sonicwall hardware, even with the ALG turned off their hardware still seems to love doing wheird things to some SIP packets.

The thing is with UFB that all users will have to run VOIP so its better to start seeing how it works in the real world now.

We have been already been doing this for about 3 years now for FTTH and this has never been a option also to be fair this has also been our standard preferred option for Naked DSL Fusion custys as well, this is one of the exact reasons why WxC was the only company to have a locked down controlled config which we have been doing for years, others were just happy to let you bring your own and it's who cares if it works or not... they will and are learning in the "real world" and under a UFB deployment that maintaining the integrity and to be able to mass deploy and support the customer base it requires a quality integrated VoIP router with controlled configs.

Show her your phone bill after making calls overseas, I'm yet to see a POTS provider who can beat a VoIP one.

Well the international calls seem to be OK after turning off the SIP ALG but now I am getting complaints about people calling us on local calls and then there is no one there (but apparently they can hear us but we can't hear them).

Was not sure how to "port forward" the PAP2T from the router. Would this necessarily help in this case or is there something else going on.
PAP2T seems to get the IP address that the router decides but how to set up a static IP for the PAP2T.
Do you do this in the GUI on the router (TP Link TD-W8960N)??

Any help appreciated.
Despite the calls being cheaper my wife just wants everything to work like it used to so if I can achieve this then it's a win-win situation

One way traffic is a NAT issue, with a SIP ALG being the classic cause of such an issue.
