Hi all,
Does anyone else have the problem where your TelstraClear supplied cable modem crashes under load?

If I start downloading a couple of games through Steam, or big Humble Bundles through bittorrent, my cable  mode (Motorola Surfboard 15mumble) will crash after an indeterminate period of time. All the lights are on, but on unicast traffic comes through the modem. I still get broadcast traffic. Doing things to my router or ethernet cable doesn't fix the problem, but power cycling the modem fixes it every time. Leaving the modem and waiting for eight hours also doesn't work.

The only thing I can think of is to tell TelstraClear to replace the modem, but I'm hoping someone here might have a simpler solution.

Cheers,
Lloyd

I've never seen or heard of anything like this before. The modem is only a layer2 bridge so there is no logical reason for this to occur.

Routers locking with with excessive traffic on the other hand is an exceptionally common problem.

Hi Lloyd,

As sbiddle's noted it's most likely to be your router. But if you message me with your account number one of the team here will have a look at the modem levels for you.

That's exactly why I'm stumped. My router is a homebrew NetBSD box and it's the first thing I suspected when this started happening, but nothing I did to my router would make unicast traffic start flowing again. Unplugging the ethernet cable should be like just like a modem power cycle as far as the router can see, but only a modem power cycle seems to work for me.

I've noticed other problems with the modem, but they have slightly different symptoms and these other problems always fix themselves quickly.

Cheers,
Lloyd

Before I posted here I was expecting that I would have to explain to someone on the end if the phone that I was quite sure that this problem that looks a lot like a router problem is really a modem problem and then explaining that because the modem is a rental, I want it replaced without a lot of drama.

Nice to see that it will just get fixed.

Cheers,
Lloyd
