I got belkin, and the wireless and even when the ethernet cable is plugged right into it, it can be really garbage and times out all the time. So I was wondering your opinions on another one?

Also, does any else have trouble with an ethernet cable going directly into the telstra modem? It works, but seems like it has alot of room to move once it has been clicked in and doesn't always register it is in all the time, my friend also has the same issue.

WRT54GL is a nice hardware that allows you to install an open source firmware with more features than the stoc. DD-WRT and Tomato are two of these.

QFT means "Quoted for Truth". Or "I agre". Or something like that.

The 54GL is an older product, rock solid with DD-WRT but has slower wireless. It's still fast enough for most things though.

I got a Netcomm N300 ADSL2+ router with 802.11n wifi. It's the best router I've had since my old DSE modem/router that would run for a year without a re-boot and just keep on going. But that old one can't see ADSL2 or ADSL2+ and I wanted more speed.

I had tried pretty much every other modem / router that was cheaper (3 x DLink and 2 x TP Link and 2 x Linksys / Cicso toilet-seat models...)...and they all failed one way or another. Either the wifi signal drops out or they get "tired" and have to be power-cycled to restore full speed / functionality.

In the end, the only really 'affrodable" router is one that actually works. No point paying fomr something that LOOKS like a router....but only works sometimes or part-time.

This router works. My PCs connect to it via 802.11n at 117mbps or 130mbps (using TP Link 802.11n USB network adaptors)....faster than wired 100mbps ethernet.

I'd recommend it.

Wow, that NetComm Router is actually affordable too.  ~$130 is cheap for a good router...

[EDIT] Unless you are looking for a router without modem functionality.

Hmmm. Basic question: is this for DSL or cable?

Too old.

Look at the Asus RT N-16, Linksys 4200 etc these days which have good third party firmware support and much better specs.

and a higher price

I just like the WRT54GL's but I do hear good things about the Asus N16 too

I don't really care for the faster wireless as all my media consuming PCs and devices are wired on gigabit and the 54GL is more than fast enough to keep up with my Internet connection

I have 2 WRT54GLs at home, one bridged into ADSL and then another one connected to the first doing a VPN to US

Asu RT-N16 with Toastman's Tomato firmware is legit. Print, file and media server, gigabit, wireless N, grunty as specs so will never fall over under heavy load. I've got QoS setup so that my browsing is never slowed down by someone else downloading, and it meters the amount of traffic every PC on the network uses.

Would definitely recommend. The WRT54GL is getting a bit old these days, and the N16 has far more features, even if its a bit more, its worth it i reckon.

I have tried D-link and linksys with varying amounts of success/frustration.

I see that Linuxluver has already mentioned TP-link and apparently had some issues but I have been running a TL-WR1043ND for a few months now (off the back of TCL cable modem) and had no issues at all.  I have never had to reboot it (which is more than I can say for my T-Box!).

I has gigabit ports and 300 Mbps wireless.  It also supports USB storage sharing.

More specs here if you are interested.... sorry about it being a retail site (I am not associated to them).

Yeah the TL-WR1043ND is a good option, can be flashed with OpenWRT/Gargoyle firmware too.
