Hey,

Anyone else having issues sending emails to certain recipients?
We've got a few clients who are having issues sending emails sometimes to some recipients and as far as I can tell it looks like Vodafone / ihug SMTP servers have been put on one or more spam blacklists.

Vodafone can you look in to this please?
As we ourselves aren't a Vodafone customer I can't log a fault and our clients are probably too busy to do it but I have told them to.

It's usually a bad idea to use your ISP's SMTP servers for these kinds of reasons. Probably best if your client's use their email provider's SMTP server.

Our clients have their own Exchange servers so no email provider involved for the incoming emails.
I use the ISP smtp servers as we've had problems in the past just using DNS for outgoing emails.

What do most people do for Exchange servers?

I know nothing about SMTP.
These are only small clients who are running Small Business Server 2003/2008/2011.

Exchange generally only gives you two options for outgoing email to be sent by either DNS or to another SMTP server.

Can't remember the DNS issues it was so long ago and I've never bothered to try it again as we haven't had any issues using the ISP smtp servers until the last couple of weeks, with Vodafone anyway.
All our other clients who aren't with Vodafone have never had issues.

I run my own mail server and I route off TCL, mainly due to certain ISP's blocking email, with Xtra being the worst, as my reverse DNS is different from my sending DNS.

The only way to get things working is to relay off my ISP.

A lot of mail filtering solutions do a reverse dns lookup on the ip address of the email server the email came from to see if it matches the domain name.

If the clients have a static ip and/or a business grade Internet connection, then usually it's just a matter of requesting a PTR record (reverse dns) be created by the internet provider.

If that's not an option another popular solution is to use a mail gateway service like www.smx.co.nz or Mail Marshall Secure Email gateway, there are heaps of them.

If email is important to business, then you should look at third party SMTP services. There are many around, including smtp.com, Amazon, DynDNS and others.

Configure your system to use that, configure proper DNS settings to let the world know the SMTP server being used is related to your domain, and be free of your ISP.

I realise that but they have got the Vodafone mail servers blacklisted so anyone using their lists for SPAM filtering is blocking any email coming from Vodafone.

You guys had this issue last week (as seen on the Vodafone forums and issues with the same clients) and it was resolved but it is back again.
Isn't it up to Vodafone to make sure their mail servers aren't blacklisted?

Not sure if the clients have logged a fault and as I said we can't do it as we aren't a Vodafone broadband customer.

We use www.mxtoolbox.com to monitor our sending IP addresses at work. We'll get an email from them if our IP addresses are blacklisted. Seems to do a resonable job of alerting us to problems and they have a free service that will monitor 2 IP addresses.

Their website also has a RBL lookup service that you can use to query multiple blacklists.

Yep mxtoolbox is great.

Have seen it get blacklisted multiple times in the last year, reported it a few times.. got tired of it so changed my friends business web/email site off Vodafone hosting (he was originally a ihug and quik customer) on to openhost.
