I've just bought a new battery for my wife's nokia mobile, as her old one was needing to be charged daily and was going flat regularly. Nokia said the new battery needed to be charged for 8 hours
I've put the battery in the mobile phone and plugged it into the re-charger and it made a 'beep' when I turned the re-charger on, but the screen on the mobile was blank - usually it lights up and says 'charging'... but it's not doing anything.

is this usual for new battery?

Have you turned the phone on? Phones can be charging even while off.

yes - phone the won't turn on... assuming this is because the battery is brand new and needs complete charging before it will work?

I have twice had phone bateries from ebay that have been too flat to charge in the phone and had to do them in my $2 shop universal charger first go. Since then ive got a proper shaped desktop charger that is a bit faster. those batts also never gave proper service either.
