Hi All,

Looking for click-to-talk software to make calls from a Desktop PC.
Effectively we just want to use our USB headsets to take and make calls over the VFX service.

Is this possible, or am I hoping for too much here?

Thanks

Works fine, you'll just need to decide what software to use. Counterpath Bria is the best option.

Really? Just choose a piece of software, install it, configure and play?  It's THAT easy?

/facepalm

So this works just out of the box?  What settings do I need from Xnet to configure the software?

Keep in mind I'm not using the Open-VFX product.

You will need an Open VFX account. It is dead simple with only half a dozen things to configure.

Great, thanks Sbiddle.

I just called Xnet to pop an order through, which can take up to 2 business days.

I did query however whether this would interrupt our existing PAP2T configuration, and was advised it's either one or the other, we can't have the PAP2T configured and run a Soft-Phone simultaneously.

Surely this isn't correct?  We're just wanting to use the same line on both devices.

SIP doesn't allow concurrent registrations with the same credientials. If you use this the last device to register will be the one that receives the calls. If you want muliple devices you need multiple SIP registrations or numbers.

Ah, well that throws a spanner in the works.
Was looking at this as an option for convenience, and this would now cause more of an inconvenience due to that requirement.

So how would this work for multiple desktop clients running Soft Phones? Each would need their own individual SIP?

How about this alternative?

Could we provision a second line via VFX, have the PAP2T handle the original number, and a soft phone handle the new number, or will the PAP2T provision both?

Thanks for sharing your knowledge, sbiddle.

Every device, whether it's a softphone or physical phone requires it's own number, so you could get a 2nd line and configure for a softphone but you're only going to be able to use that on one PC at a time. if you want multiple softphones you're going to need additional lines, or a PBX.

Ah-ha!

Okay, that could work.

  1. Leave our primary VFX number as it is, provisioned by the PAP2T
  2. Purchase a second VFX number ($11.50 p/m)
  3. Have the soft-phone provision the second VFX number.
  4. Divert calls unconditionally on-demand from primary to secondary number (at no cost).
Meh, a tiny bit of cost involved, but for convenience sake, worth it for our situation.

Thanks for letting me pick your brain.  Most helpful.

Deploy Asterisk, and problem solved, can have as many phones as your want.

Was just contemplating that, but didn't want to get too techy, as that will unleash a whole lot more questions lol.
  • What special hardware is required to provide physical handset connectivity? (i.e. connecting a cordless phone to the Asterix PC instead of the PAP2T?
  • Can Asterix allow multiple phones/soft-phones to use a single SIP? (only one active call at any one time, obviously)

The PAP2T will allow you to connect a physical handset

Oh, that's a mind boggler, I would have thought that the PAP2T be decommissioned, else it would conflict with Asterix.  I assume you'd point the provisioning URL of the PAP2T to obtain its settings from Asterix?

Edit:  Or, Asterix uses the PAP2T as a gateway to make/receive calls, and the soft phones gain their config from Asterix?

If this can work, then I'm liking this option!

Its been a while since I've done it but the PAP2T simply does the analogue to digital conversion and Asterisk handles the SIP registration etc.

From memory there are a couple of good guides floating around for Trixbox and a PAP2T here in NZ, worth a Google.

Not sure how accurate this guide still is, but I used it a couple of years back with a lot of success
