Hello, my sister has just got an asus z92t notebook that I am trying to connect through our wireless-G router. My dell laptop automatically recognises and connects to it, and from memory I didn't do anything special to make it work other then putting in the password ( I have only had it for 2 months). I set up my own wireless router at my house as well with my dell notebook. The asus comes up saying it is connected with the router but it has limited (or no) connectivity. I have gone into the network card settings on the asus notebook and have put in an IP address and gateway, but not dns addresses as i couldn't find them. Also our router has WPA2 security but the asus only has wep in the network card- does that mean that I need to reconfigure the router to wep security? Anything else I should try?? Thanks

The best idea for laptops (and other portable devices) is to set them to obtain their IP address by DHCP rather than using a fixed IP address. That way the Gateway Address and DNS addresses will be passed through automatically by the DHCP server in your router.

Regarding the WPA/WEP issue, I'm not sure, but no doubt Mauricio can tell you. Most probably you would have to downgrade all devices to WEP which is the only common protocol supported by all devices in your network.

Personally, I use MAC address filtering rather than any form of WPA/WEP as it gives more throughput which is important for transferring files between devices.

As Grant said, use DHCP that way each pc is given all the details it needs to navigate the gateway and out. Otherwise, put the routers address in the DNS entry as that is what the DHCP service will do.
